About this route

A balanced deep-south Red Sea itinerary from Port Ghalib that combines the offshore drama of Daedalus Reef with the sprawling coral labyrinth of St. John's, right by the Sudanese border. Daedalus delivers steep walls, schooling hammerheads and oceanic whitetips, while St. John's offers caves, swim-throughs, shallow gardens at Gota Soraya and Habili Ali, and rich macro life. Around 17–20 dives over 6 diving days; Elphinstone is typically added on the way home.

Day-by-day plan

  1. Day 1: Embarkation – Port Ghalib

Arrival transfer to Port Ghalib Marina, boarding from 18:00, cabin check-in, welcome briefing and dinner on board. Overnight in the marina.

  2. Day 2: Check Dive & Crossing South

Breakfast and a sheltered check dive on Abu Dabbab or Marsa Shouna, then a long southbound crossing toward the St. John's reef system through the afternoon and night.

Dive sites: Abu Dabbab, Marsa Shouna

  3. Day 3: St. John's – Outer Reefs

Three dives on the outer St. John's pinnacles: Habili Ali in the blue for grey reefs and hammerheads, Habili Gafaar with its dense soft-coral cover and schooling barracuda, and Dangerous Reef as a late-afternoon drift along a current-swept wall.

Dive sites: Habili Ali, Habili Gafaar, Dangerous Reef

  4. Day 4: St. John's – Caves & Gardens

Three relaxed dives in the inner St. John's area: the famous caves and cathedral light shafts of Gota Kebira, the shallow coral gardens of Gota Soraya, and Umm Kharorum / Habili St. John's for turtles, napoleon wrasse and reef sharks.

Dive sites: Gota Kebira Caves, Gota Soraya, Umm Kharorum

  5. Day 5: St. John's to Daedalus

Morning dive at Habili Ali, then a daytime crossing north-east to Daedalus Reef. Late-afternoon dive on the west wall to acclimatise to the open-water conditions.

  6. Day 6: Daedalus Reef

Three dives around Daedalus (Abu El Kizan): the north plateau at dawn for schooling scalloped hammerheads, the east wall with its anemone city, and a long drift on the soft-coral-encrusted west wall where oceanic whitetips often patrol the shallows.

Dive sites: Daedalus North Plateau, Daedalus East Wall, Daedalus West Wall

  7. Day 7: Elphinstone & Marsa Alam

Two dives on Elphinstone Reef – north plateau in the blue for thresher and oceanic whitetip, south plateau drift across the saddle. Final easy dive in the Marsa Alam area in the afternoon, then arrival in Port Ghalib for the farewell dinner.

Dive sites: Elphinstone North Plateau, Elphinstone South Plateau

  8. Day 8: Disembarkation

Breakfast on board and disembarkation between 09:00 and 10:00. Transfer to Hurghada (HRG) or Marsa Alam (RMF) airport.
