The gopher tortoise is a terrestrial reptile of the southeastern United States, with Florida containing a major portion of its range. Its sturdy forelimbs excavate long burrows in sandy soil, creating shelter used by numerous other animals. This makes it an important ecosystem engineer rather than merely a resident grazer. Habitat loss, fragmentation and unsuitable land management threaten populations, especially where open, fire-maintained vegetation becomes overgrown or is converted to development.

Protected coastal dunes, scrub trails and sandy pine uplands offer plausible land viewing. Inland excursions may improve habitat access, while occupied burrows are protected and must never be entered, blocked or disturbed.
