When to go
Best time to travel: your month-by-month guide
Seasons decide almost everything on an adventure cruise: polar waters open only in their short summer, the Galápagos are warm and calm from December to May, and Norway and Alaska are at their best in the long days of June to August. Green means peak conditions, amber shoulder season, red the months when ships rarely sail.

How to choose an adventure cruise: ship, route and season
An adventure cruise is a small expedition ship that takes you to places big cruise liners cannot reach. Instead of crowded ports you land by Zodiac on wild beaches, walk with naturalist guides among sea lions or penguins and spend most of the day ashore. Ships usually carry between 16 and 100 guests, so landings are quick and groups stay small.
Most travelers decide in the same order: first the month, then the region, then the budget. Polar voyages run only in a short summer window, tropical islands are best in their dry season. The ship comes last: compare the number of guests, cabin size and how many landings the itinerary includes rather than the ship size alone.

01
Start with your travel month
The calendar narrows the map faster than anything else. Antarctica and the Arctic only open for a few summer weeks, the Galápagos are calmest from December to May, and Southeast Asia shines in its dry season. If your dates are fixed, let the month pick the region for you; if your dates are flexible, pick the region first and travel in its peak window.

02
Match the region to what you want to see
Every region has a signature experience. Choose the Galápagos or Alaska for close wildlife encounters, Norway or Greenland for fjords and ice, Indonesia or the Maldives for warm water and coral, and Antarctica for the pure expedition feeling. Our region groups above and the season table below show at a glance what is possible when.

03
Then compare the ships
Only now look at the vessels. Fewer guests mean faster landings and more time ashore; a good guide team matters more than a big cabin. Compare guest count, included excursions, cabin layout and price per night, and check how many landings per day the itinerary really includes. Our ship comparison above lists live starting prices for every vessel.
