The Caspian turtle is a freshwater turtle of southwestern Asia, recognisable by fine pale stripes on its head and neck. Its common name can cause confusion in Turkey, where the related Balkan terrapin occupies much of the west and was formerly grouped with it. Reliable identification therefore requires attention to geography as well as markings. This is a wetland animal, not a sea turtle or a routine inhabitant of open coastal beaches.

Freshwater banks in verified eastern or southeastern range areas offer plausible viewing habitat. An inland excursion is generally required; turtles at western coastal wetlands are often the related Balkan terrapin rather than this species.
