
Stegostoma tigrinum
The graceful inhabitants of the Indo-Pacific’s warm coastal waters, often observed by fortunate divers, are perhaps best known by their striking common name, the Leopard Shark (scientific name: Stegostoma tigrinum). While juveniles display bold, contrasting stripes reminiscent of their other common name, the Zebra Shark, mature individuals undergo a fascinating transformation, developing a pattern of dark spots against a lighter background that gives rise to their more prevalent moniker. These beautiful creatures can grow to an impressive 2.5 meters in length, their elongated, cylindrical bodies tapering to a long, whip-like tail that can be almost as long as the rest of their body, tipped with a distinctive lower caudal lobe that is almost absent. Their dorsal fins are set far back, and they possess five small gill slits. What truly sets them apart visually, however, is their unique pattern and their relatively small, almost catfish-like mouths positioned ventrally on their broad, somewhat flattened heads, equipped with several rows of small, blunt teeth perfectly suited for their specific diet. Generally observed as solitary animals, these sharks are largely nocturnal. During daylight hours, divers often encounter them resting motionless on the sandy seabed, camouflaged amongst the substrate, or tucked into crevices on rocky reefs and within the nooks of coral formations. Their preference for shallow coastal waters, typically ranging from a few metres to around 60 metres, makes them relatively accessible to recreational divers. While generally solitary, on rare occasions, groups may be observed congregating in specific areas, though the reasons for these temporary gatherings are not fully understood. Their movements are typically slow and deliberate, and they are not considered aggressive or dangerous to humans, making them a truly serene and captivating encounter for any diver. As the sun dips below the horizon, the Leopard Shark awakens, transitioning into its role as a dedicated bottom-feeder. Their diet primarily consists of benthic invertebrates, with crabs, shrimp (particularly mantis shrimp), molluscs, and small octopuses forming the bulk of their meals. They are exceptionally well-adapted for this predatory lifestyle, using their keen sense of smell and electroreception to detect hidden prey buried in the sand or concealed within reef structures. Once prey is located, their small, muscular mouths and specialized feeding mechanism come into play; they can rapidly expand their buccal cavity, creating a powerful suction that vacuums up their unsuspecting victims. While primarily specialists in invertebrates, they will opportunistically consume small, slow-moving fish they encounter along the seabed. Reproduction in these sharks is oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. Females produce large, dark brown or purplish-black egg cases, each containing a single developing embryo. These distinctive, purse-shaped egg cases, often covered in hairy filaments, are then attached to suitable structures on the seabed, such as corals or rocks, by adhesive tendrils. The gestation period within the egg case can be quite long, and the striped juveniles that emerge seek out even shallower, more protected areas like mangrove estuaries and seagrass beds, which offer sanctuary from larger predators and a rich supply of juvenile prey. This early life stage is crucial for their survival before they mature and venture into deeper, more exposed habitats. For divers, encountering these magnificent creatures is often a highlight. They are frequently found in the vibrant waters of the Indo-Pacific, from the rich marine biodiversity of the Philippines and Indonesia to the expansive reefs of Thailand and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Look for them patiently resting on sandy patches near coral reefs, often unperturbed by a diver’s respectful presence, allowing for excellent photographic opportunities. Their calm demeanor and beautiful patterns make for truly memorable underwater moments. However, despite their widespread distribution, the Leopard Shark is currently classified as Endangered. This concerning status is largely due to fishing pressures, both targeted and incidental, for their fins, meat, and liver oil, as well as habitat degradation. Efforts to conserve these sharks and their vital habitats are ongoing, and responsible diving practices play a small but important role in minimising disturbance to these gentle giants. Witnessing a Leopard Shark gliding gracefully or resting peacefully is a poignant reminder of the ocean's enduring beauty and the critical need for its protection.
