What is Nitrox?
Enriched Air Nitrox uses higher oxygen content to reduce the nitrogen your body absorbs at depth. Less absorbed nitrogen means longer no-decompression limits, shorter surface intervals and noticeably less post-dive tiredness.
How the course works
Nitrox is a one-day theory course (4–6 hours) covering oxygen partial pressures, maximum operating depths, and how to analyse a tank with an oxygen analyser. There is one written exam. Most agencies (PADI, SSI, SDI, TDI) require zero open-water dives — just classroom or online modules.
Real benefits on a liveaboard
• Longer bottom time: At 24m on EAN32 you get around 65 minutes NDL versus 37 minutes on air — nearly double.
• Shorter surface intervals: You can comfortably do four dives per day instead of three.
• Less fatigue: Most divers report feeling sharper after dive four on Nitrox than after dive three on air.
• Safety margin: If you dive Nitrox but plan with air tables, you build a significant safety buffer.
Maximum Operating Depth (MOD)
Nitrox is not a depth-extending tool. The maximum partial pressure of oxygen recreational divers should not exceed is 1.4 ata, which gives:
• EAN32 — MOD of 33m
• EAN36 — MOD of 28m
• EAN40 — MOD of 24m
For dives below 30m, regular air or trimix is the right gas — not Nitrox.
Cost on liveaboards
Most operators charge a Nitrox supplement of $80–$200 for the week (unlimited fills). Some Red Sea, Maldives and Indonesia liveaboards include Nitrox free of charge. The course itself costs roughly the same as one specialty dive — easily worth it for any trip with three or more diving days.
Analysing your tank
Even on liveaboards where the dive deck staff do the analysis, you remain personally responsible for confirming and signing the gas log before each dive. The 30-second routine: shake the tank, attach the analyser, wait 60 seconds, log the actual oxygen percentage and your maximum operating depth.
