
The blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) is a medium-to-large requiem shark easily recognised by its robust, fusiform body, long pointed snout, and elongated gill slits. Dark grey to brown on its upper surface and white underneath, it features a distinct pale band along its flanks. Its common name derives from the black tips or borders visible on its pectoral, dorsal, pelvic, and lower caudal fins, though its anal fin remains distinctly unmarked. Unlike some related species, it lacks an interdorsal ridge between its dorsal fins. Energetic and fast-swimming, the blacktip shark exhibits a timid demeanour towards humans under normal conditions, compared to other large requiem sharks. Both juveniles and adults form social aggregations of varying sizes, often segregating by sex outside the mating season. They are famed for their agility and dramatic surface breaches, frequently launching themselves out of the sea and spinning several times along their long axis before splashing back down on their backs or sides. Found in tropical and subtropical coastal marine environments globally, blacktip sharks are targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries for their flesh, leather, fins, and liver oil. Although wary of divers, they can become bold or aggressive in the presence of food, such as around fishing vessels or baiting operations. Because they forage in shallow waters under 30 metres depth, they are occasionally involved in brief, unprovoked bite incidents involving swimmers or surfers due to mistaken identity in murky conditions.
