Sea hares are large, fascinating marine gastropod molluscs belonging to the clade Aplysiomorpha (order Anaspidea), named for the prominent pair of sensory tentacles atop their heads that closely resemble rabbit ears. These distinctive structures, known as rhinophores, are chemosensory organs used to detect scents and waterborne chemical cues. Sea hares possess soft, fleshy, and somewhat plump bodies featuring large, wing-like lateral extensions of their mantle called parapodia. These parapodia fold over the dorsal surface to protect an internal, thin, translucent shell remnant made of protein and calcium. Their coloration is remarkably diverse and cryptic, ranging from mottled olive greens, chocolate browns, and sandy beiges to vibrant purples and patterns adorned with rings or spots, often closely mimicking the specific algae and substrate upon which they dwell. Depending on the species, they range from small, delicate specimens of a few centimetres to colossal varieties such as the California black sea hare (Aplysia vaccaria), the largest of all known gastropod species. Ecologically, sea hares are critical benthic herbivores distributed globally across temperate, subtropical, and tropical shallow marine environments. They spend their days crawling methodically over hard substrate, coral rubble, and soft sediment using a broad, muscular foot. Sea hares are slow-moving and gentle, making them exceptionally rewarding to observe, but their fragile, soft bodies require divers to exercise meticulous buoyancy control to avoid accidental contact. Never touch, poke, or handle a sea hare, as causing them to expel their defensive ink stresses the animal and wastes precious metabolic energy. When photographing them, adopt a low, parallel angle to capture their distinctive rhinophores and eye spots, using a macro or mid-range lens. Natural lighting or gentle, diffused strobe power works best to highlight their intricate skin patterns without blowing out delicate textures. Check seagrass meadows, shallow reef flats, and the bases of kelp stipes carefully, as their camouflage can make them difficult to spot at first glance. Always maintain a respectful distance, ensuring your fins remain clear of the substrate and avoiding any disturbance to egg strings nearby.

Encounters are possible year-round in warm-temperate and tropical waters, but peak aggregations align with seasonal algal blooms and spawning cycles. In California, the giant black sea hare is most abundant during the late spring and summer months from May to September, when giant kelp beds thrive and water temperatures warm. In the Mediterranean Sea, *Aplysia depilans* and *Aplysia fasciata* are frequently observed in shallow bays from June to October. Across the Indo-Pacific, including destinations such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia's Great Barrier Reef, diverse sea hare species can be found throughout the year, with optimal diving conditions and clear visibility typically extending from April to November. In the subtropical waters of the Canary Islands, late winter through spring brings dense populations grazing across coastal rocky reefs.

Habitat

Sea hares are found across the globe in tropical, subtropical, and temperate seas, inhabiting depths from the shallow intertidal zone down to around 40 metres, though they are most abundant between 1 and 15 metres. They thrive in sheltered, sunlit coastal environments rich in vegetation, such as seagrass meadows, protected bays, macroalgae-covered rocky reefs, kelp forests, and shallow coral reef flats. The waters this animal calls home span broad ocean basins, including the Indo-Pacific, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and both the eastern and western coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean. While some species favour the calm waters of sheltered lagoons and estuaries, others are adapted to the surge-swept rocky shores of temperate coastlines, where extensive beds of red and brown algae provide both shelter and sustenance.

Diet

Sea hares are predominantly herbivorous grazers that feed upon a wide variety of red, green, and brown macroalgae, as well as marine seagrasses. They use a tough, chitinous, toothed ribbon called a radula to rasp away vegetation from rocks, reef framework, and sediment surfaces. As they ingest algae, the chemical compounds and pigments from their food are incorporated into their tissues, directly influencing their body coloration and providing natural camouflage. Interestingly, chemicals derived from consumed red algae are synthesised and stored in specialised glands to produce the vivid purple ink used for defence. Sea hares feed continuously throughout the day and night, though peaks in activity often correspond to dawn and dusk when ambient light shifts. Their heavy grazing plays a crucial ecological role in cropping macroalgae, preventing fast-growing weeds from overgrowing and suffocating delicate corals and seagrass beds.
