The flaming file shell is an obligate suspension feeder, relying entirely on the continuous movement of ambient water currents to bring food directly to its valve opening. It feeds primarily on microscopic suspended organic matter, including unicellular phytoplankton, microzooplankton, and fine organic detritus drifting through the reef matrix. As water flows across the bivalve's open shell, its enlarged, specialised ciliated gills (ctenidia) act as a microscopic sieve. The beating cilia generate localised feeding currents, trapping passing nutrient particles in a sticky layer of mucus before moving them along specialised food grooves straight to the mouth for digestion.
