
Sphyrna mokarran (Great Hammerhead)
The majestic Great Hammerhead, Sphyrna mokarran, stands as an icon of the ocean’s wild grandeur, instantly recognisable by its distinctive, broad cephalofoil. This magnificent creature, the largest of all hammerhead species, can stretch to an impressive 6.1 metres, though most encountered by divers are typically smaller, still commanding a breathtaking presence. Their overall colouration is usually a greyish-brown to olive on the dorsal side, fading to a lighter, often off-white belly, providing excellent camouflage against the vast blue. Unlike other hammerheads, the leading edge of their ‘hammer’ is almost straight, with only a very subtle indentation in the centre, a key identifier for discerning divers. Their tall, sickle-shaped dorsal fin is another prominent feature, making them unmistakable as they glide through the water. While their size can be imposing, their movements are generally graceful and deliberate, an elegant display of an apex predator in its element. These awe-inspiring sharks are solitary hunters for the most part, though they have been observed in loose aggregations, particularly in certain areas during specific seasons. Their unique cephalofoil isn't just for show; it’s a highly evolved sensory platform. Covered in electroreceptors, known as ampullae of Lorenzini, this broad head allows them to sweep the seabed, detecting the faint electrical impulses emitted by hidden prey, especially their favoured meal: stingrays. Divers fortunate enough to witness a Great Hammerhead hunting will be struck by its efficiency and power. They use their ‘hammer’ not only to detect but also to pin down and incapacitate rays, delivering powerful blows before consuming their prey. Beyond rays, their diet is diverse, encompassing a wide array of fish such as grouper and snapper, smaller sharks, and even crustaceans and cephalopods, showcasing their adaptability as formidable predators. Reproduction in Great Hammerheads is viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young that have developed inside the mother, nourished by a yolk sac placenta. After a gestation period of around 11 months, females typically give birth to a litter of 6 to 42 pups in shallow coastal nurseries. These nurseries offer a relatively safe haven for the vulnerable young, protecting them from larger predators, including adult hammerheads, until they are robust enough to venture into more open waters. This reproductive strategy, while ensuring the immediate survival of the offspring, contributes to their critically endangered status due to the relatively low number of pups compared to other shark species, combined with the threats faced by the adults. Ecologically, the Great Hammerhead plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they help regulate the populations of their prey species, preventing overpopulation and ensuring genetic fitness within those communities. Their preference for bottom-dwelling prey like stingrays also influences the behaviour and distribution of these animals, indirectly affecting the benthic environment. The presence of a healthy Great Hammerhead population is often indicative of a thriving and robust marine ecosystem, highlighting their significance as a keystone species. Observing them in their natural habitat provides a powerful reminder of the intricate web of life beneath the waves. For scuba divers, encountering a Great Hammerhead is often considered the pinnacle of a shark diving experience. These sharks inhabit tropical and warm temperate waters across the globe, preferring coastal and offshore areas over continental shelves and island chains, typically in depths ranging from the surface down to about 80 metres, though they can venture much deeper. Divers are most likely to spot them in clear, relatively shallow waters, often cruising along outer reefs, seamounts, or even shallow sand flats and channels. Patience is key when seeking these magnificent creatures; they are wild animals and sightings are never guaranteed. The best conditions for encounters usually involve strong currents, which attract their prey, or during seasonal movements where they congregate for feeding or breeding. Maintain a respectful distance, move slowly, and simply observe as these incredible sharks glide effortlessly through their underwater world, a truly unforgettable moment for any diver. Sadly, the Great Hammerhead is listed as Critically Endangered, primarily due to overfishing for its fins, which are highly valued in the shark fin trade. They are also vulnerable to incidental capture in commercial fishing gear, such as longlines and gillnets. Habitat degradation and climate change further exacerbate the pressures on their populations. Conservation efforts are crucial, focusing on international protection, sustainable fishing practices, and the establishment of marine protected areas to safeguard these iconic sharks and ensure their continued presence in our oceans for generations to come.
