
The sharpnose puffer (Canthigaster rostrata) is a petite, charismatic member of the pufferfish family, Tetraodontidae, instantly recognisable by its elongated, tapered snout and laterally compressed body. Reaching a maximum length of around 12 centimetres, this diminutive species displays an intricate and eye-catching colour pattern. Its upper body features a rich brown or olive hue that contrasts sharply with a pale, whitish belly, demarcated by prominent dark brown stripes extending along the upper and lower flanks. Radiating outwards from its large, iridescent blue-green eyes are vibrant turquoise and electric-blue lines that create a striking 'sunburst' pattern. The caudal fin is framed above and below by crisp, dark margins, and the fish uses delicate, translucent pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins to propel itself through the water column with remarkable agility and hovering precision. Widely distributed across the warm waters of the Western and Central Atlantic, the sharpnose puffer is an integral component of shallow reef and seagrass ecosystems. Unlike some of its pelagic or purely nocturnal relatives, this species is strictly diurnal, spending the daylight hours actively patrolling its territory. Adults frequently form monogamous breeding pairs or small harems, aggressively defending defined patches of reef from rivals of the same species. When threatened, the sharpnose puffer employs a multi-tiered defence strategy: it can rapidly retreat into tight coral crevices, display warning postures, or inflate its flexible abdomen with water to appear dramatically larger and unpalatable to potential predators. Furthermore, like most tetraodontids, its internal organs and skin contain potent tetrodotoxin, a lethal neurotoxin that serves as a formidable chemical deterrent against larger piscivores such as groupers and jacks. The Sharpnose Puffer, Canthigaster rostrata, typically exhibits a diurnal activity pattern, being most active during daylight hours. While often observed singly or in pairs, they are not considered a highly social species, generally occupying individual territories or moving within a defined home range. Regarding reproduction, this species is oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. Spawning usually occurs during daylight hours, often in areas with sandy substrates near coral reefs. The female deposits adhesive eggs onto the substrate, which are then fertilised by the male. Specific mating seasons or peak spawning periods are not extensively documented across their entire range, but observations suggest it can occur year-round in tropical waters. Clutch sizes can vary, but females are known to lay multiple small batches of eggs. Incubation period is relatively short, usually a few days, after which planktonic larvae hatch. These larvae undergo a pelagic phase before settling and developing into benthic juveniles, eventually reaching sexual maturity. For scuba divers and snorkelers, encounters with the sharpnose puffer are a delightful and frequent highlight of Atlantic and Caribbean dives. These curious little fish are often seen hovering just centimetres above the reef substrate, cocking their heads to inspect tiny crevices or observing approaching divers with animated, independently mobile eyes. While they are generally timid and will retreat if pursued, a diver who maintains motionless neutral buoyancy will often find them returning to their foraging grounds, unfazed by human presence. Their vibrant markings, expressive behaviour, and accessible depth range make them a beloved subject for underwater macro photographers and a quintessential indicator of healthy, biodiverse shallow reef communities.
