
The cowtail ray (Pastinachus sephen) is an imposing and easily recognisable whiptail stingray belonging to the family Dasyatidae. Its most striking morphological feature is a broad, deep, flag-like skin fold running along the underside of its tail, which resembles the tufted tail of a cow and gives the species its common name. The disc is exceptionally thick, rounded, and wedge-shaped toward the snout, with pectoral fin margins that create a diamond outline broader than it is long. Dorsally, the cowtail ray displays a uniform colouration ranging from dark charcoal grey to olive-brown or dusky black, contrasting sharply with a bright white ventral surface. Its tail is long, robust at the base, and carries one or two serrated, venomous spines positioned further back along the appendage than in many other stingray species. The skin across the dorsal mid-line is heavily armed with rough dermal denticles, lending it a textured, leathery appearance. Widely distributed across the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, this ray occupies a crucial ecological niche as a high-order benthic predator and bioturbator. Its range extends from the Red Sea and the eastern coast of Africa through India, Southeast Asia, Micronesia, and northern Australia. Cowtail rays are primarily solitary creatures, though they occasionally gather in loose aggregations around productive estuaries, sheltered bays, and cleaning stations. They are renowned for their remarkable tolerance of fluctuating salinity levels, frequently venturing into brackish mangrove channels and upstream into freshwater river mouths. By excavating deep foraging pits in search of infaunal prey, the cowtail ray constantly turns over seafloor sediments, oxygenating substrate layers and exposing food for opportunist reef fish. Females give birth to live young, with litter sizes typically ranging from one to seven pups. When approached quietly without aggressive pursuit, a cowtail ray will often remain settled or hover gracefully nearby, allowing divers to admire its velvety texture and powerful tail fin.
