The Spanish dancer (Hexabranchus sanguineus) is a remarkably large dorid nudibranch and marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Hexabranchidae. Its scientific name translates literally to "blood-coloured six-gills", reflecting its striking appearance. While commonly growing to lengths of 25 to 40 centimetres, some individuals reach up to 60 centimetres (24 inches), positioning it among the largest sea slug species in the world. Coloration varies geographically across the tropical Indo-Pacific; Red Sea specimens are almost invariably solid deep crimson, whereas populations further east present mottled patterns of red, orange, white, and yellow. Recent molecular and morphological research published in 2023 revealed that what was long considered a single species actually comprises a complex of at least five distinct species. Morphologically, the Spanish dancer possesses a soft, flattened oval body. Its anterior dorsal section features a pair of retractable rhinophores used for sensing the environment, while the posterior portion hosts six branched, contractile gills that surround the anus and are inserted independently into the body. These pale rose-coloured gills remain exposed, as is characteristic of dorid nudibranchs. Its oral tentacles are composed of a flexible membrane fitted with large digital lobes. To travel along hard surfaces, the animal glides smoothly using millions of microscopic cilia covering the underside of its muscular foot. When crawling at rest, the lateral edges of the mantle curl upwards to form a scroll-like peripheral border. However, when threatened or disturbed, the nudibranch unfurls these expansive mantle skirts and launches off the substrate into open water. By vigorously flexing and scissoring its body in a series of rhythmic undulations, it propels itself through the water column. This dramatic, billowy movement resembles the swirling dress of a flamenco dancer, giving rise to its popular common name. Hexabranchus is recognized as the only nudibranch genus capable of sustained free-swimming. The Spanish Dancer, Hexabranchus sanguineus, is a large and distinctive nudibranch known for its nocturnal activity and solitary nature, though it may be observed in pairs during mating. During the day, it typically hides under ledges or within crevices. At night, it emerges to feed, primarily on sponges, and to move across the reef. Its striking swimming behaviour, involving undulating its mantle margins, is usually a response to disturbance or a means of locomotion between feeding grounds. Reproduction in this species is hermaphroditic, with individuals engaging in reciprocal copulation. They are oviparous, laying a characteristic, ruffled egg ribbon containing numerous small, encapsulated eggs. While a specific spawning season is not well documented for all regions, reproduction generally occurs year-round in tropical waters. The larvae are planktonic, developing into veligers before settling and metamorphosing into the benthic adult form, a common life history for many nudibranchs. The exact incubation period and time to maturity are not precisely quantified in readily available literature but are typical of marine gastropods. In addition to its swimming display, the Spanish dancer incorporates potent chemical defences to ward off predators such as the moon wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) and the white-spotted hermit crab (Dardanus megistos). By consuming encrusting sponges, the nudibranch sequesters toxic macrolides and oxazole alkaloids, storing them within its body tissues and transferring them directly into its egg masses. Finding a Spanish dancer requires careful timing and keen observation. Because this sea slug photophobically retreats into dark reef crevices, caves, and under ledges during daylight hours, night dives offer the best opportunity to encounter active individuals crawling across open substrate or swimming in the water column. When approaching a crawling Spanish dancer, move slowly and maintain neutral buoyancy to avoid disturbing the animal. Inspect the folds of its mantle carefully using a dive light; divers can often spot the small, brightly coloured emperor shrimp (*Periclimenes imperator*) living commensally on the slug's body. If the nudibranch begins its characteristic swimming display, give it ample space and refrain from blocking its trajectory or shining high-intensity torches directly into its rhinophores. During daytime dives, keep an eye out for their distinctive egg masses attached to rocks or coral rubble. These egg ribbons are laid in bright pink or red coiled rosettes that closely resemble paper flowers or rose blooms. Divers should strictly avoid handling or poking resting individuals to force a swimming response, as unnecessary swimming consumes vital energy and exposes the animal to water-column predators.

Spanish dancer reproduction occurs continuously throughout the year across its tropical and subtropical range, though observations indicate a slight reduction in mating activity during colder winter months. Because populations do not undergo extreme seasonal migrations, divers can encounter adult specimens and egg ribbons in any month of the year provided water conditions are favourable for night diving. Water temperature directly influences the early life cycle and embryonic development of the species. Laboratory studies demonstrate that egg rosettes deposited on reef rubble hatch in approximately 6 days when ambient sea temperatures are maintained at 27°C. In cooler waters around 22°C, incubation extends up to 12 days before the egg mass softens, loses its bright coloration, and releases active swimming larvae. Regional conditions like sea temperature variations affect localized activity levels. For example, observations in Japanese waters like Shizuoka record individuals in water temperatures around 15°C, whereas Red Sea and tropical Pacific encounters occur in much warmer waters. Photoperiod is the primary factor dictating visibility, making dark night dives productive year-round.

Habitat

The Spanish dancer is widely distributed across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific region. Its recorded geographical range extends from the Red Sea (the type locality being El-Tor on the Sinai Peninsula) and the Western Indian Ocean off East Africa, eastward through French Polynesia, Japan, Australia, and across the Pacific to the coastal waters of North and South America. In terms of vertical distribution, the species occurs at depths ranging from 1 to 50 metres (3 to 160 feet), though individuals predominantly remain in shallow reef zones no deeper than 20 metres. They inhabit rocky shores, coral reefs, coral rubble, and sandy bottom patches adjacent to rich reef structures. A key requirement of their microhabitat is the presence of abundant sponge growth, alongside deep crevices, overhangs, and coral caverns that offer protection from direct sunlight during the day. The species is found either individually or in solitary pairs crawling across substrate or sheltered within reef architecture.

Diet

The Spanish dancer is a non-selective benthic carnivore that feeds predominantly on encrusting marine sponges. It shows a strong dietary preference for sponges belonging to the family Halichondriidae, particularly species within the genus *Halichondria*. Faecal analysis reveals that its diet encompasses at least 11 different sponge genera spanning five orders and two classes, demonstrating a broad capacity to consume diverse sponge species across the reef. While encrusting sponges constitute the overwhelming majority of its food intake, microscopic examination of gut contents has identified trace amounts of non-sponge items. These incidental materials include filamentous algae, coral fragments, polychaete worm tubes, small gastropod shells, polyzoans, and crab chelae (claws), which are likely ingested unintentionally while grazing on target sponge colonies. Feeding takes place late at night after the sea slug emerges from daytime hiding places. By consuming these sponges, the Spanish dancer absorbs and concentrates secondary metabolites known as macrolides. These sequestered chemical compounds serve a dual purpose: they act as a potent deterrent against fish predation for the adult nudibranch and are passed into its egg ribbons to protect developing embryos.
