
Skates are cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae, characterised by flattened, rhomboidal disc-shaped bodies formed by broad pectoral fins fused seamlessly to the head. Unlike their close relatives, the stingrays, skates possess a relatively fleshy, stout tail equipped with two small dorsal fins near the tip and a reduced caudal fin, completely lacking a venomous stinging barb. Their dorsal surfaces vary from mottled sandy-brown and slate-grey to intricate patterns of rosettes, dark spots, and pale rings that provide exceptional camouflage against the seabed. Many species exhibit distinct midline rows of sharp, thorn-like denticles along the back and tail, alongside a pointed, translucent snout supported by rostral cartilage. Undersides are typically pale, smooth, and feature five pairs of gill slits, the mouth, and nostrils, while large spiracles sit prominently behind the eyes on the upper surface to facilitate breathing while resting on the sea floor. Ecologically, skates are quintessential benthic predators occupying temperate and cold-water marine environments worldwide. While some species dwell in shallow coastal bays and estuaries, many are adapted to deep continental shelves and abyssal plains descending thousands of metres. Skates are oviparous, reproducing through internal fertilisation and depositing tough, leathery egg cases—colloquially known as "mermaid's purses"—anchored to kelp, rocks, or sandy substrate by curved horns. Their life history is defined by slow growth rates, late sexual maturity, and low fecundity, rendering populations exceptionally vulnerable to overfishing, particularly as unintended bycatch in commercial bottom-trawling and gillnet fisheries. As meso-predators, they maintain benthic ecosystem equilibrium by regulating invertebrate populations and serving as prey for larger apex sharks and marine mammals. Encountering a skate underwater is a captivating experience that demands keen observation and refined buoyancy control. Often half-buried beneath fine silt or coarse gravel with only their periscopic, golden-flecked eyes and pulsing spiracles visible, finding one feels like unearthing a well-kept ocean secret. When gently approached, a resting skate may reveal its presence through the subtle undulating motion of its pectoral margins or abruptly launch itself into the water column with elegant, bird-like wing flaps, settling again a short distance away.
