
Porcupinefishes (family Diodontidae) are medium-to-large marine fishes belonging to the order Tetraodontiformes. Found in shallow temperate and tropical seas worldwide, these distinctive reef dwellers are closely related to true pufferfishes (family Tetraodontidae), but are distinguished by the prominent spines covering their bodies. Depending on the genus, these modified scales are either short and permanently erect, as seen in burrfishes (Chilomycterus), or long and mobile, lying flat against the skin until the fish is threatened (Diodon). Visually striking, porcupinefish feature short, broad bodies with smooth, firm skin and disproportionately large, round, protruding eyes. Their body colouration ranges from sandy-yellow or beige to brown, marbled with dark blotches and dotted with small black spots. Their upper and lower teeth are fused into a heavy, parrot-like beak designed for crushing hard armour. Lacking pelvic fins, they rely on synchronized movements of their pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins for propulsion. Though slow swimmers, this sculling motion makes them remarkably manoeuvrable around complex reef architectures. When confronted by potential predators, porcupinefish deploy a dramatic defence strategy. By rapidly swallowing water or air, they inflate their bodies to almost double vertically, transforming into an intimidating, near-spherical shape. As the body distends, their sharp spines erect in unison, creating an impenetrable ball of needles that prevents smaller-mouthed predators from swallowing them. Beyond their physical defences, many species accumulate tetrodotoxin in their liver, skin, gonads, and viscera—a lethal neurotoxin produced by dietary bacteria that is over 1,200 times more potent than cyanide. Porcupinefish (Diodontidae) are generally solitary and nocturnal, often seeking shelter in reefs or rocky crevices during the day before emerging to forage for hard-shelled invertebrates at night. Their typical behaviour involves slow, deliberate movements, but they can inflate their bodies rapidly when threatened, displaying their sharp spines as a defence mechanism. Regarding reproduction, porcupinefish are oviparous, engaging in broadcast spawning, where eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the water column. This process typically occurs in pairs at the surface, often during warm months or around high tide. The fertilised eggs are pelagic, drifting with currents for a period before hatching into planktonic larvae. These larvae undergo various developmental stages in the open ocean, eventually settling as juveniles in coastal habitats once sufficiently developed. The exact duration of their larval stage, clutch size, and age at sexual maturity are often not precisely quantified across all species, but their reproductive strategy relies on the dispersal of numerous tiny eggs. Scuba divers hold a special affection for porcupinefish due to their expressive faces and calm demeanour. During daylight hours, they are often encountered hovering quietly under ledges, inside caves, or near reef overhangs. Their large, seemingly reproachful eyes track approaching divers with wary fascination, making them one of the most charismatic encounter subjects on any tropical dive.
