Sea anemones are soft-bodied marine invertebrates belonging to the order Actiniaria within the class Anthozoa and phylum Cnidaria. Named after the terrestrial flowering plant due to their vibrant, flower-like appearance, these predatory animals are closely related to corals and jellyfish. Unlike true jellyfish, sea anemones completely lack a medusa phase, remaining polyps throughout their life cycle. Across the global oceans, over 1,200 species have been classified, ranging from minute individuals measuring just a few millimetres to giant specimens reaching up to 1.5 metres in diameter. The classic sea anemone anatomical structure consists of a cylindrical column topped by a flat oral disc. At the centre of this disc lies a single opening that serves as both mouth and anus, surrounded by concentric rings of flexible tentacles. Most species attach firmly to rocks or coral reefs using a sticky basal or pedal disc. Others burrow into soft sand using a bulbous base called a physa, whilst a select few can slide, float, or even swim by flexing their bodies and tentacles. Sea anemones are famous among divers for their intricate micro-ecosystems and mutualistic partnerships. Many tropical species house single-celled photosynthetic algae, such as zooxanthellae or zoochlorellae, within their cells. These algae receive shelter and nutrients while supplying the host anemone with oxygen and carbohydrates. Furthermore, anemones frequently host clownfish (Amphiprion species) and specialized cleaner shrimp. Protected by specialized mucous coatings, these symbionts shelter among the stinging tentacles, defending the host from predators and supplying vital nutrients through waste. Underneath their delicate appearance lies a formidable predatory mechanism. Anemone tentacles are lined with specialized stinging cells called cnidocytes, which contain capsule-like organelles known as nematocysts. When a microscopic sensory hair on the cell is touched, it triggers an explosive reaction that launches a barbed harpoon structure into the target, injecting potent neurotoxins and actinotoxins. While most anemones are completely harmless to human skin, highly toxic species such as the hell's-fire anemone (Actinodendron arboreum) can inflict severe, potentially dangerous injuries on divers. Sea anemones reproduce through both sexual and asexual methods. During sexual reproduction, polyps release eggs and sperm through their central mouth directly into the water column. The resulting fertilised eggs mature into free-swimming planula larvae before settling onto suitable substrate to transform into juvenile polyps. Asexually, anemones can split in half or regenerate fully functional polyps from tiny fragmented pieces of their body, contributing to their impressive long-term resilience on marine substrate.

When observing sea anemones underwater, divers should maintain excellent buoyancy to avoid accidental contact. Although most anemone species present no danger to human skin, brushing against venomous varieties like the hell's-fire anemone (Actinodendron arboreum) or certain Stichodactyla species can result in severe stings and painful injuries. Always keep fins and exposed skin well away from the reef surface, as sea anemones frequently colonise narrow crevices and exposed coral heads. Anemones serve as active micro-habitats housing clownfish, damselfish, and small crustaceans. Approach host anemones slowly and smoothly to avoid startling the resident organisms. Avoid touching, poking, or harassing host anemones, as disturbing them forces resident clownfish or shrimp out of their protective shelter, exposing them to reef predators. For underwater photographers, maintain a respectful distance, use steady positioning, and refrain from using continuous bright lighting or physically manipulating the tentacles to reveal hidden animals.

Best Season

Sea anemones are sessile or low-mobility organisms present year-round across all latitude zones and oceans. Unlike migratory marine megafauna, anemone populations do not exhibit dramatic seasonal migrations, making encounters reliable during any diving season. In tropical regions such as the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean, water temperatures remain warm throughout the year, supporting vibrant host anemones and their resident clownfish or symbionts in all months. In temperate and polar environments, seasonal dive planning depends primarily on regional sea conditions, water clarity, and plankton blooms rather than anemone availability. Spring and summer months frequently bring warmer water and higher surface light levels, which stimulate photosynthetic zooxanthellae activity in shallow-water species. However, plankton blooms during these months can temporarily reduce visibility. Planning dives during periods of calm weather and clear water offers the best viewing conditions for observing tentacle extension and macro symbionts.

Habitat

Sea anemones occupy an extraordinarily diverse geographical range, stretching from equatorial tropical coral reefs to freezing Arctic waters. They inhabit nearly all marine depths, occurring from intertidal rock pools down to deep abyssal marine environments. While many species thrive in shallow, sunny, nutrient-rich reef zones, others flourish in sheltered deep-water drop-offs and dark sediment beds. Depending on species adaptation, sea anemones utilise different substrates for anchorage. Sessile polyps use their adhesive pedal disc to secure themselves to solid substrates such as volcanic rock, dead coral bases, shell debris, and artificial structures. Soft-bottom dwelling species lack a typical pedal disc, employing a bulbous lower organ called a physa to anchor deeply into muddy or sandy sediments. A small number of specialized anemone species float near the surface or drift with water currents, allowing them to colonise open oceanic habitats.

Diet

Sea anemones are carnivorous opportunistic predators that feed on a wide range of prey swept past by water currents. Their diet consists primarily of zooplankton, small fish, crustaceans such as shrimp and prawns, and molluscs including clams and mussels. Larger anemone species are capable of overpowering and consuming larger marine animals that collide with their tentacle canopy. Feeding occurs continuously day and night whenever prey contacts the tentacles. Upon contact, thousands of microscopic stinging nematocysts explode, immobilising the target with paralyzing neurotoxins and actinotoxins. The flexible, muscular tentacles then bend inward, transferring the paralyzed prey directly into the central mouth for entry into the gastrovascular cavity. In addition to active capture, many anemones hosting photosynthetic zooxanthellae derive a significant portion of their daily metabolic energy from nutrients produced via photosynthesis.
