
The sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) is a stout, heavy-bodied requiem shark instantly recognisable by its remarkably tall, triangular first dorsal fin. This dramatic fin originates unusually far forward on the body, aligned directly over or slightly ahead of the pectoral fin insertions. The snout is characteristically broad, blunt, and rounded, while the long, broad, sickle-shaped pectoral fins sweep back gracefully to support cruising efficiency in coastal currents. A distinct interdorsal ridge runs along the spine between the dorsal fins. Colouration varies from a subtle brownish-grey to bronze or slate along the dorsal surface, transitioning seamlessly to a crisp white underside along the flanks. Unlike several of its close requiem shark cousins, the fins of the sandbar shark lack prominent dark or white tips, maintaining a clean, uniform coloration throughout maturity. Ranging across warm-temperate and tropical waters worldwide, the sandbar shark is a coastal-pelagic nomad frequently found cruising over continental shelves, sand flats, and coastal reefs. It is renowned for undertaking extensive seasonal migrations, moving poleward in summer as water temperatures rise and retreating equatorward during cooler winter months. These sharks often segregate by size and sex, occasionally forming loose schools when migrating or gathering in nutrient-rich coastal bays. As slow-growing apex predators, females take up to a decade and a half to reach sexual maturity and reproduce only every two to three years via viviparous reproduction, giving birth to litters of between four and fourteen pups. This protracted life history makes the species exceptionally vulnerable to commercial longlining and targeted finning operations. Meeting a sandbar shark in the open ocean is an exhilarating and serene experience for scuba divers. Despite their imposing build and classic predatory profile, these sharks are generally shy and unobtrusive around humans, typically gliding past with measured, powerful tail beats just beyond the reef edge or above a sandy sea floor. Watching their enormous dorsal fin slice effortlessly through clear coastal water is a highlight of temperate and subtropical diving. Because their populations have declined drastically in regions like the Atlantic and Mediterranean, witnessing a mature sandbar shark in its natural habitat serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for marine protected areas and sustainable fisheries management across the globe.
