
The common torpedo ray (Torpedo torpedo), also widely known as the eyed electric ray, is an intriguing and instantly recognisable benthic elasmobranch. Its body comprises a nearly circular, flattened pectoral disc that is smooth-skinned and entirely devoid of dermal denticles or thorns along the central midline. The dorsal surface features a rich light-brown to reddish-ochre coloration adorned with a distinctive arrangement of five vivid, sky-blue spots rimmed by dark-brown borders—an unmistakable marking that gives this species its alternate common name. Posterior to the round disc lies a stocky, muscular tail supporting two rounded dorsal fins set close together, terminating in a well-developed, paddle-shaped caudal fin. A pair of kidney-shaped electric organs, derived from modified branchial muscle tissue, occupies each side of the head, capable of generating an electric discharge used for both defence and predation. Distributed across the warm-temperate to tropical waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean and throughout the Mediterranean Sea, this solitary predator spends much of its daylight hours partially or entirely buried beneath loose substrate. By violently fluttering its pectoral margins, the ray settles into the sand or mud, leaving only its elevated eyes and large spiracles exposed to the water column. As an ambush hunter, it lies motionless until unsuspecting benthic teleost fish or cephalopods swim into range. Ecologically, it serves as a specialised mid-tier predator, keeping coastal bottom-dwelling populations in check while occasionally falling prey to larger coastal sharks. Unlike pelagic rays that glide using undulating wing flaps, the common torpedo relies primarily on side-to-side strokes of its muscular caudal tail for locomotion, swimming with deliberate, methodical sweeps. Mating and gestation periods are not extensively documented, but litters typically consist of 3 to 21 pups, with larger females tending to produce more offspring. The gestation period is believed to be several months. The embryos develop within individual capsules inside the oviduct, initially nourished by yolk and later by uterine fluid. Pups are born as fully formed miniatures of the adults, capable of independent hunting, and reach sexual maturity at a length of approximately 20-25 cm for males and 25-30 cm for females.
