Unlike their close relatives, the stingrays, skates possess a relatively fleshy, stout tail equipped with two small dorsal fins near the tip and a reduced caudal fin, completely lacking a venomous stinging barb. Their dorsal surfaces vary from mottled sandy-brown and slate-grey to intricate patterns of rosettes, dark spots, and pale rings that provide exceptional camouflage against the seabed. Many species exhibit distinct midline rows of sharp, thorn-like denticles along the back and tail, alongside a pointed, translucent snout supported by rostral cartilage. Undersides are typically pale, smooth, and feature five pairs of gill slits, the mouth, and nostrils, while large spiracles sit prominently behind the eyes on the upper surface to facilitate breathing while resting on the sea floor. Encountering skates requires impeccable buoyancy control to prevent kicking up fine silt or silting out visibility, as these animals inhabit soft-bottom environments. Approach slowly and horizontally from the side rather than descending directly from above, which simulates a predatory attack and will cause the animal to flee. Maintain a respectful distance of at least one to two metres to observe natural behaviours without causing stress. If taking photographs, set up your strobe positioning wide to minimise backscatter from suspended benthic particles, and use a moderate wide-angle or macro lens depending on whether you intend to frame the whole disc or focus on spiracles and eyes. Use a gentle modelling light rather than high-powered beams pointed directly into their sensitive eyes. Never attempt to touch, prod, or grasp the tail, as the dorsal thorns can inflict painful abrasions.

Best Season

Diving for skates is largely dictated by temperate seasonal water clarity and breeding migrations. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the warmer months between May and October provide the calmest sea conditions and best underwater visibility, though autumn brings higher numbers of mating adults in Scottish sea lochs. In Norway, the winter months from November to February offer crystal-clear fjord diving where cold-water species frequently ascend into shallow littoral zones. Along the Pacific Northwest coast of Canada and the United States, autumn and winter between October and March yield optimal horizontal visibility for spotting big skates across muddy basin slopes. Habitat

They predominantly inhabit benthic environments spanning from intertidal shallows and coastal mudflats down to continental slopes exceeding 2,500 metres in depth. Divers most frequently encounter them over soft sand, fine silt, gravel beds, and mixed pebble substrates interspersed with kelp forests, rocky reefs, and historical shipwrecks. The waters this animal calls home include the sea lochs and coastal shelves of the British Isles, the deep glacial fjords of Norway, the temperate kelp-fringed shores of California, British Columbia, and the continental shelf waters around Japan and New Zealand, where cold, nutrient-rich currents sustain rich benthic communities.

Diet

Skates are opportunistic, bottom-dwelling carnivores that feed primarily on a diverse array of benthic invertebrates and small demersal fish. Their staple prey includes decapod crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters, and caridean shrimps, alongside burrowing polychaete worms, bivalves, and small cephalopods like octopuses and cuttlefish. Larger individuals regularly prey upon bottom-dwelling teleost fish, including sandeels, flatfish, gobies, and small gadoids like juvenile cod and whiting. Skates employ an electro-sensory network known as the ampullae of Lorenzini, located across the underside of the snout, to detect the minute electrical fields generated by hidden, buried prey. They hunt predominantly during twilight and night-time hours, hovering closely over the seabed before rapidly descending to pin animals with their pectoral disc, using flattened, crushing pavement teeth to break through hard exoskeletons and shells.
