Sea urchins are globe-shaped, spiny marine echinoderms belonging to the class Echinoidea. Found in benthic environments worldwide, these ancient organisms feature a rigid internal shell known as a test, composed of fused calcium carbonate plates called stereom. Adult sea urchins possess five-fold radial symmetry (pentamerism), which is arranged in segments radiating around a central axis like an orange. The mouth is situated on the flat underside, or oral surface, while the anus is positioned at the top aboral surface. Body sizes typically range between 3 and 10 centimetres across, although the largest recorded species can measure up to 36 centimetres. Taxonomically, sea urchins are categorised into two primary subclasses: Cidaroidea and Euechinoidea. Subclass Cidaroidea, or slate-pencil urchins, represents a primitive lineage dating back approximately 268 million years, identifiable by heavy, blunt spines that frequently host epibiotic algae and sponges. Modern sea urchins belong to Euechinoidea, which includes regular, symmetrical forms as well as irregular echinoids like sand dollars and heart urchins. Irregular urchins have evolved flattened body plans enabling them to burrow through soft sandy sediments. Lacking a central brain, sea urchins navigate the seabed using hydraulic pressure within hundreds of tiny, adhesive tube feet, occasionally using their movable spines to push themselves forward. They are crucial ecological engineers in marine ecosystems. By grazing heavily on algae and seaweed, urchins prevent fast-growing turf and macroalgae from smothering hard corals and rocky substrate. However, if their natural predators—such as triggerfish, puffers, otters, and starfish—are depleted, unchecked urchin populations can overgraze habitats, creating completely barren marine zones. Because urchins colonise shallow reef tops, narrow swim-throughs, and rocky drop-offs, accidental contact can result in painful puncture wounds or broken spine fragments lodged under the skin. Always maintain a comfortable distance from hard substrates and refrain from steadying yourself on rocks without looking closely first, especially during night dives when many species emerge into the open to feed. Never handle sea urchins bare-handed or disturb them unnecessarily. Certain species possess toxic defences; for instance, long-spined Diadema urchins carry sharp spines lined with toxins, while the flower urchin (Toxopneustes pileolus) features venomous, flower-like pedicellariae capable of delivering dangerous stings. Approach slowly to observe their fascinating mechanics: watch how hundreds of transparent tube feet stretch and adhere to surfaces, or how individuals use their spines to wedge tightly inside deep reef crevices for shelter.

Because they inhabit stable marine environments from tropical coral reefs to frigid polar shores, seasonal changes in diver visibility, water temperature, and local weather dictate the diving conditions rather than urchin presence. However, timing your dives to coincide with reproductive behaviours offers unique observational opportunities. Many tropical and temperate species form large spawning aggregations, gathering in high densities on open reef tops or sea floors. During these coordinated events, males and females synchronously broadcast millions of eggs and sperm into the water column. While exact spawning triggers vary by region and water temperature, local dive operators and marine research groups can often provide specific regional calendars for witnessing these mass reproductive events.

Habitat

Sea urchins occupy an extraordinary geographical and bathymetric range, residing in every ocean on Earth from warm tropical seas to icy polar waters. They are strictly benthic invertebrates that inhabit all depth zones, ranging from intertidal rocky shores washed by tides to extreme deep-sea environments down to 5,000 metres. The deepest recorded sea urchin was discovered at an astounding hadal depth of 7,340 metres. In terms of microhabitats, regular sea urchins prefer firm, hard substrates such as coral reefs, rocky outcrops, boulder fields, and artificial structures where they can firmly anchor themselves using their adhesive tube feet and wedge into protective crevices. Conversely, irregular sea urchins—such as sand dollars and sea potatoes—are specifically adapted to soft seafloors, using specialized flattened bodies and modified minute spines to burrow beneath sand and fine mud.

Diet

Sea urchins are opportunistic omnivores whose primary diet consists of marine vegetation, including turf algae, macroalgae, kelp, and seagrasses. In addition to plant matter, urchins regularly ingest sessile and slow-moving benthic animals, such as sponges, crinoids, mussels, and small sea cucumbers, scraping them directly off rock and coral surfaces as they move. Feeding is accomplished through a highly specialized mouth mechanism located on the underside of the test known as Aristotle's lantern. This intricate organ features complex skeletal jaws and five self-sharpening teeth designed to scrape stubborn algae from hard substrates. If drift algae or organic matter settles on top of the urchin out of reach of its underside mouth, the animal uses its flexible tube feet to transport food particles down around its body to the mouth. Feeding occurs continuously throughout the day, with many species becoming significantly more active under cover of darkness.
