
The blotched fantail ray (Taeniurops meyeni), also widely recognised as the round ribbontail ray, is a massive, striking elasmobranch easily identified by its broad, nearly circular pectoral disc. Its thick, fleshy body lacks prominent thorns along the back, presenting a smooth, robust profile. The dorsal surface features a highly variable, mottled pattern of dark grey, charcoal, or black blotches over a lighter pale grey or brownish background, creating a disruptive camouflage that blends seamlessly against coral rubble and sandy bottoms. Its relatively short, thick tail terminates in a deep, broad ventral fin fold—resembling a paddle or fan—which gives the species its common name. The tail also bears one or two serrated venomous spines positioned near the mid-length, which are used solely for defence. Large, expressive eyes rest atop the head adjacent to prominent spiracles, which allow the ray to breathe efficiently while resting stationary on the substrate. They are predominantly solitary, though large aggregations occasionally form around productive cleaning stations, deep current-swept channels, and sheltered seamounts.
