It is the sole member of the monotypic genus Elagatis and is closely related to the amberjacks of the genus Seriola. Unlike many typical jacks that possess deep, laterally compressed bodies, the rainbow runner exhibits an elongated, subcylindrical, fusiform body shape resembling a torpedo. Its head and snout are long and pointed, and its upper jaw terminates distinctly before the eye. The species is easily recognized by its distinctive colouration and fin morphology. Its upper body and sides range from dark olive-blue to green, fading to a clean white belly. Running along each flank are two vivid light blue to bluish-white longitudinal stripes, separated by a wider yellowish-green or olive stripe. Its fins display olive or yellowish tones, and it features a large, deeply forked tail. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of a detached two-rayed finlet positioned behind both the second dorsal fin and the anal fin, along with an absence of scutes on the lateral line. Divers are most likely to spot them along outer reef walls, offshore drop-offs, deep coastal reefs, and around floating debris or artificial fish-attracting devices (FADs). Because these fish treat floating structures like stationary home bases, schools frequently occupy a zone up to 12 metres deep and 10 metres wide around buoys and moorings. When diving with rainbow runners, maintain good buoyancy control in midwater and avoid making abrupt movements towards the school. They are swift pelagic swimmers and will quickly move out of range if pursued. Position yourself quietly in the water column or near blue-water drop-offs, allowing the school to circle or stream past naturally. Photographers should prepare for fast action and high-contrast surface lighting, as these fish move rapidly through sunlit upper waters.

Geographically, it ranges across the Western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil, the Eastern Atlantic from Côte d'Ivoire to Angola, the Mediterranean (as an occasional Lessepsian immigrant), throughout the Indo-Pacific (though rare in the Persian Gulf), and the Eastern Pacific from California to Ecuador and the Galapagos. Within its range, the species occupies diverse marine environments including open oceanic waters, deep coastal zones, outer coral and rocky reef systems, and shallow lagoons. Juveniles have even been recorded entering Taiwanese estuaries. Diet

In addition to pelagic prey, rainbow runners are documented consuming benthic marine invertebrates such as sea urchins, sea stars, corals, and marine worms, alongside smaller schooling fish species.
