
The Jenkins whipray (Pateobatis jenkinsii) is a substantial, robust stingray easily recognised by its broad, diamond-shaped pectoral disc and distinctive dorsal texture. Its disc is slightly wider than it is long, with rounded outer corners and a bluntly pointed snout. The dorsal surface ranges in colour from a uniform yellowish-brown to tan or greyish-brown, lacking the intricate spots or reticulated patterns seen on many related species, though the margins can be subtly darker. A defining anatomical trait is a broad band of enlarged, seed-like flattened denticles running along the midline of the back, which transitions into a continuous row of sharp, spear-like thorns extending onto the tail base. The tail is slender and whip-like, longer than the disc when intact, and bears no cutaneous folds or fins, but is equipped with one or more serrated, venomous stings located well behind the base. This species is broadly distributed across the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from coastal eastern Africa, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf, eastwards through South and Southeast Asia to northern Australia and the western Pacific islands. Demersal in nature, the Jenkins whipray spends much of its time resting on sandy substrates, muddy embayments, or sheltering beneath coral overhangs and reef ledges. While largely solitary, it occasionally congregates in small aggregations where food is plentiful or within sheltered lagoons. It plays an essential ecological role as an apex benthic predator, bioturbating soft sediment while foraging and helping cycle nutrients across reef-adjacent sand flats. Like other whiptail stingrays, it reproduces via aplacental viviparity, with females nourishing developing embryos through histotroph before giving birth to live pups. The Jenkins Whipray, Pateobatis jenkinsii, typically exhibits a benthic lifestyle, often found resting on soft substrates like sand or mud in coastal waters and estuaries. Its activity patterns are not extensively documented, but like many demersal rays, it is presumed to be more active during periods of foraging, using its flattened body to scour the seabed for prey. Reproduction in this species is aplacental viviparous, meaning the embryos develop internally, initially sustained by a yolk sac, and later by uterine milk secreted by the mother. Specific mating seasons, gestation periods, and litter sizes are not precisely quantified in readily available literature for this particular whipray. However, other closely related species in the Dasyatidae family often have relatively small litter sizes, typically ranging from one to a few pups. Young whiprays are born live and are miniature versions of the adults, developing independently after birth. The age and size at which individuals reach sexual maturity are not well established for Pateobatis jenkinsii. For scuba divers, encountering a Jenkins whipray resting on a sun-dappled sand bank or sheltering under an expansive table coral is an impressive sight. Their generous disc size and calm demeanour allow for close, peaceful observation when approached with care. Divers often spot them entirely buried beneath a light layer of sand with only their watchful, golden eyes and spiracles visible. Observing a whipray lift off the seabed—billowing sand into the water column as its broad pectoral wings ripple with effortless power—is an evocative reminder of the fragile balance and sheer biodiversity of Indo-Pacific coral ecosystems.
