Its disc is slightly wider than it is long, with rounded outer corners and a bluntly pointed snout. The dorsal surface ranges in colour from a uniform yellowish-brown to tan or greyish-brown, lacking the intricate spots or reticulated patterns seen on many related species, though the margins can be subtly darker. A defining anatomical trait is a broad band of enlarged, seed-like flattened denticles running along the midline of the back, which transitions into a continuous row of sharp, spear-like thorns extending onto the tail base. The tail is slender and whip-like, longer than the disc when intact, and bears no cutaneous folds or fins, but is equipped with one or more serrated, venomous stings located well behind the base. This species is broadly distributed across the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from coastal eastern Africa, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf, eastwards through South and Southeast Asia to northern Australia and the western Pacific islands. It occupies depths ranging from the intertidal shallows down to around 50 metres, though it is most frequently encountered between 3 and 25 metres. Its preferred habitats include extensive sandy flats, silty bays, sheltered mangrove-fringed lagoons, and the sandy aprons adjacent to fringing and barrier coral reefs. It frequently shelters under large coral overhangs, deep cave swim-throughs, and near artificial structures or shipwrecks where soft sediment accumulates. The waters this animal calls home stretch from South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, and the Red Sea, across the Arabian Sea and the Indian subcontinent, through Southeast Asian archipelagos like Indonesia and the Philippines, down to northern Australia and parts of Melanesia.

Diet

The Jenkins whipray is a specialised carnivore adapted for foraging on benthic and infaunal invertebrates and small bottom-dwelling fishes. Its diet consists predominantly of decapod crustaceans, including swimming crabs, mud crabs, mantis shrimps, and burrowing prawns, alongside bivalve molluscs, polychaete worms, and small demersal teleosts. Hunting takes place primarily during crepuscular and nocturnal hours, though opportunistic feeding during the day is common. To locate prey concealed beneath the sediment, the ray utilises its highly sensitive ampullae of Lorenzini to detect bioelectric fields, paired with keen olfactory and tactile senses. Once prey is pinpointed, it uses energetic flapping of its broad pectoral disc to excavate the substrate, creating feeding depressions in the sand. Strong, paved tooth plates in its subterminal mouth then crush hard-shelled organisms before swallowing.
