Because these fish measure only a few centimetres in length and frequent fragile habitats like crinoids, sea urchins, and delicate kelp fronds, divers must avoid touching or disturbing the host organisms. Approach slowly from the side without casting a shadow, as sudden movements cause the clingfish to scurry to the reverse side of its host. For underwater photographers, a dedicated macro setup—such as a 60mm or 105mm macro lens paired with an external diopter (wet lens)—is essential to capture their intricate eyes, papillae, and striped patterns.
