Cornetfish, belonging to the family Fistulariidae, are among the most distinctively shaped teleost fish encountered on coral reefs. Characterised by an exceptionally elongated, slender, tubular body, they possess a long, flattened snout that functions much like a drinking straw. Unlike trumpetfish, cornetfish are distinguished by a long, whip-like filament that extends from the centre of their forked caudal fin. Their coloration is typically a subtle, cryptic greenish-brown, silver, or grey on the dorsal surface with a pale underside, often overlaid with faint neon-blue spots or bars that can pulse and shift depending on the animal's mood and hunting state. Their tiny dorsal and anal fins are positioned far back near the tail, leaving the rest of the body rigid and needle-like in profile. Widespread throughout tropical and subtropical marine waters, cornetfish—most notably the bluespotted cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii) and the red cornetfish (Fistularia petimba)—inhabit shallow coastal waters, coral reefs, rocky shoals, and seagrass meadows. They are agile yet patient stalkers, employing stealth to blend into the surrounding water column. Rather than swimming rapidly over open areas, they glide with minimal fin movement, occasionally hovering motionless to align their slender bodies with the line of sight of unsuspecting prey. Some species have also demonstrated remarkable ecological adaptability, notably F. commersonii, which entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal as a Lessepsian migrant and quickly became a prominent apex predator of small coastal fishes across the basin. Cornetfish typically exhibit a solitary or small-group social behaviour, often found lurking among seagrass beds, coral reefs, or rocky substrates, where their elongated bodies and cryptic colouration provide excellent camouflage. They are primarily diurnal hunters, ambushing small fishes and crustaceans with a sudden, rapid strike. Regarding reproduction, Cornetfish are oviparous, releasing eggs directly into the water column. While a specific, well-documented mating season is not universally defined across all species, spawning generally occurs during warmer periods. Females produce pelagic eggs that drift before hatching into larval stages. These larvae are also pelagic, developing in the open ocean before settling into coastal habitats as juveniles. The precise clutch size and incubation period are not consistently documented for all Fistularia species but are generally thought to be typical for marine broadcast spawners. Cornetfish reach sexual maturity at varying lengths, depending on the species and environmental conditions. For scuba divers, encountering a cornetfish is a masterclass in reef camouflage and opportunistic predation. These fish frequently use large herbivorous or non-threatening species, such as parrotfish, groupers, or sea turtles, as living shields, swimming pressed against their flanks to slip past prey defences undetected. Observing a cornetfish snap open its tiny jaw with explosive vacuum force is an unforgettable sight. Their silvery, reflective flanks catch beams of sunlight filtering through the shallows, making them a captivating and curious subject for divers exploring rich reef systems around the world.

To observe cornetfish behaving naturally, maintain excellent neutral buoyancy and avoid rapid, head-on swimming movements. These fish are sensitive to pressure waves and will calmly drift away if approached too quickly. Float motionlessly in mid-water along reef walls, bommies, or seagrass edges, and wait for them to swim past or shadow a larger herbivore. For underwater photographers, a wide-angle or mid-range zoom lens (such as a 24-70mm equivalent) is ideal to capture their extreme, elongated length and tail filament. Use natural ambient light in shallow water to showcase their silver reflections, or gentle strobes angled outward to illuminate the subtle iridescent blue spots along their back without washing out their translucent snouts. Keep an eye out for shadow-hunting interactions with green sea turtles or parrotfish for exceptional behavioural shots.

Best Season

In the Red Sea, cornetfish are abundant year-round, but conditions are most tranquil between September and November and from March to May. In Indonesia and across the Coral Triangle, diving is spectacular throughout the year, with Komodo peaking from April to November and Raja Ampat offering pristine dive conditions from October to April. In the Mediterranean Sea, where the bluespotted cornetfish has established a thriving non-native population, the warmest waters and best diving occur between July and October. For the Great Barrier Reef, visit between June and November for supreme underwater clarity and calm sea states.

Habitat

Cornetfish inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, found extensively across the Indo-Pacific, the Western and Eastern Atlantic, and the Mediterranean Sea. They occupy depths ranging from shallow lagoons of just 1 metre down to deeper reef slopes and drop-offs beyond 100 metres, although *Fistularia petimba* can venture into deeper coastal waters beyond 130 metres. Divers typically find them hovering above sheltered coral reefs, sandy patches near reef drop-offs, rocky reefs, and vast seagrass meadows. In regions like the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, and the Caribbean, they often drift just above coral heads or along current-swept reef flats in crystal-clear water where ambient light highlights their camouflage.

Diet

Cornetfish are specialised ambush and stalking carnivores that feed almost exclusively on small teleost fishes and occasionally on benthic crustaceans like swimming crabs and shrimp. Their primary prey includes damselfish, wrasses, silversides, and juvenile schooling fish. To hunt, the cornetfish moves almost imperceptibly slowly towards a target, aligning its thin, pencil-like profile head-on to minimise its visual silhouette. Once within striking distance, it expands its long, tubular snout with astonishing speed, creating a powerful vacuum that sucks prey whole into its mouth. They are diurnal predators, most active during the bright daylight hours and twilight periods around dawn and dusk. Interestingly, they often engage in 'shadow hunting', trailing closely alongside larger, peaceful fish or rays to close the distance to prey without causing panic.
