The velvet surgeonfish (Acanthurus nigricans), also widely recognised as the whitecheek or goldrim surgeonfish, is an exquisitely marked member of the surgeonfish family Acanthuridae. It features a deep, laterally compressed oval body cloaked in an intense, matte velvet-black to dark olive-brown hue that absorbs light underwater. This dramatic background provides a stark contrast to its vivid ornamentation: a bright, distinct white oval patch sits directly beneath each eye, while glowing yellow bands run along the bases of both the dorsal and anal fins, widening toward the rear. The caudal fin is largely white, marked by a bright yellow vertical band at the base of the caudal peduncle and trimmed with a delicate electric-blue outer margin. Like all acanthurids, it possesses a razor-sharp, modified spine on either side of the caudal peduncle, nestled within a yellow socket that serves as a conspicuous warning to rivals and predators. Ranging widely across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the eastern coast of Africa through the central and eastern Pacific islands, the velvet surgeonfish occupies sunlit coral reefs and surge-swept reef flats. When diving with velvet surgeonfish, a calm and methodical approach is essential, as these swift swimmers are vigilant and easily startled by erratic movements. Maintain neutral buoyancy and position yourself slightly down-current or parallel to the reef crest, allowing the fish to continue its natural grazing path without feeling cornered. Avoid chasing or making sudden lunges with your camera rig. For underwater photographers, a wide-angle or medium focal length lens (such as a 24-70mm equivalent) paired with dual strobes is ideal to capture the rich velvet texture of the body without blowing out the delicate white cheek markings or electric-blue fin fringes. Aim strobes slightly outward to minimise backscatter in surge-prone shallow water. Always give the fish ample space around the tail area, as its defensive caudal spine is remarkably sharp and capable of inflicting deep lacerations if threatened.

It predominantly frequents shallow lagoon passages, exposed outer reef flats, and surge-swept reef crests at depths ranging from 1 to 40 metres, though it is most abundant in the top 15 metres where sunlight fosters lush algal growth. The species strongly prefers hard substrate environments dominated by vibrant branching and encrusting corals.

Diet

The velvet surgeonfish is primarily a specialised herbivore that plays a critical role in maintaining coral reef balance. Its diet consists almost entirely of benthic filamentous turf algae and microalgae, which it crops meticulously from hard substrata, dead coral surfaces, and limestone boulders. Equipped with small, spatulate teeth featuring serrated edges, it scrapes plant material cleanly without causing structural damage to the underlying coral matrix. While grazing, it also ingests minute amounts of detritus, diatoms, and microscopic organic matter, which contribute valuable nutrients. Feeding activity occurs almost exclusively during daylight hours, commencing shortly after dawn and peaking throughout the sunlit midday when photosynthetic rates and nutritional values of algae are highest.
