
Guitarfishes, belonging to the order Rhinopristiformes (chiefly the families Rhinobatidae and Glaucostegidae), occupy a fascinating evolutionary transition between sharks and true rays. Characterised by a flattened, wedge-shaped or spade-like head that merges seamlessly with wide pectoral fins, their anterior body resembles an acoustic guitar or violin, which gives them their evocative common name. Behind the pectoral disc, their form transitions into a stout, muscular, shark-like tail equipped with two distinct dorsal fins and a well-developed caudal fin. Their coloration is an exquisite study in camouflage: the dorsal surface presents mottled shades of sandy beige, olive, slate-grey, or warm ochre, frequently adorned with subtle spots, bands, or symmetrical ocelli that mimic sun-dappled substrate. The ventral side is stark white or pale cream, housing the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits. Rather than propelling themselves through the water via flapping pectoral disc motions like eagle rays or stingrays, guitarfishes drive themselves forward with powerful lateral sweeps of their muscular tail, much like a typical shark. Ecologically, guitarfishes are specialised benthic predators distributed throughout warm-temperate, subtropical, and tropical coastal waters across the globe, spanning the Indo-Pacific, Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, and parts of the Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific. They are predominantly bottom-dwelling animals that spend significant daylight hours partially or completely buried beneath loose sediment, with only their elevated, periscope-like eyes and large spiracles protruding above the seafloor. These spiracles draw oxygen-rich water across their gills without sucking in seabed debris, allowing them to respire effortlessly while remaining motionless. As solitary wanderers or loose seasonal aggregations during breeding migrations, they navigate sand flats, seagrass meadows, and outer reef perimeters. Like other elasmobranchs, they are viviparous or aplacental viviparous (ovoviviparous), giving birth to live young after lengthy gestation periods. Because of their low fecundity and vulnerability to bottom-trawl fisheries, gillnets, and habitat degradation, numerous species face severe population declines worldwide. Pups are born as miniature versions of the adults, fully developed and independent, with no parental care post-birth. Age or size at sexual maturity also varies across species but is usually reached after several years. Encountering a guitarfish during a dive is a captivating experience that combines the thrill of spotting a master of disguise with the majesty of seeing an ancient lineage at work. Often, the first sign of an animal is merely the subtle outline of a spade-shaped head or a pair of golden, watchful eyes gazing out from the sand. When approached with smooth, calm buoyancy, a guitarfish may remain remarkably still, trusting in its flawless camouflage. Should it decide to move, it erupts from the sediment in a momentary cloud of silt, gliding away across the seabed with an effortless, serpentine grace that holds divers spellbound. Observing these shy creatures offers divers a profound glimpse into elasmobranch evolution, while underscoring the urgent necessity of global marine conservation to safeguard these critically threatened apex and meso-predators from extinction.
