Guitarfishes, belonging to the order Rhinopristiformes (chiefly the families Rhinobatidae and Glaucostegidae), occupy a fascinating evolutionary transition between sharks and true rays. Characterised by a flattened, wedge-shaped or spade-like head that merges seamlessly with wide pectoral fins, their anterior body resembles an acoustic guitar or violin, which gives them their evocative common name. Behind the pectoral disc, their form transitions into a stout, muscular, shark-like tail equipped with two distinct dorsal fins and a well-developed caudal fin. Their coloration is an exquisite study in camouflage: the dorsal surface presents mottled shades of sandy beige, olive, slate-grey, or warm ochre, frequently adorned with subtle spots, bands, or symmetrical ocelli that mimic sun-dappled substrate. The ventral side is stark white or pale cream, housing the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits. Rather than propelling themselves through the water via flapping pectoral disc motions like eagle rays or stingrays, guitarfishes drive themselves forward with powerful lateral sweeps of their muscular tail, much like a typical shark. Ecologically, guitarfishes are specialised benthic predators distributed throughout warm-temperate, subtropical, and tropical coastal waters across the globe, spanning the Indo-Pacific, Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, and parts of the Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific. As solitary wanderers or loose seasonal aggregations during breeding migrations, they navigate sand flats, seagrass meadows, and outer reef perimeters. Because of their low fecundity and vulnerability to bottom-trawl fisheries, gillnets, and habitat degradation, numerous species face severe population declines worldwide. Encountering a guitarfish during a dive is a captivating experience that combines the thrill of spotting a master of disguise with the majesty of seeing an ancient lineage at work. Often, the first sign of an animal is merely the subtle outline of a spade-shaped head or a pair of golden, watchful eyes gazing out from the sand. When approached with smooth, calm buoyancy, a guitarfish may remain remarkably still, trusting in its flawless camouflage. Should it decide to move, it erupts from the sediment in a momentary cloud of silt, gliding away across the seabed with an effortless, serpentine grace that holds divers spellbound. When seeking out guitarfishes, maintain impeccable neutral buoyancy and hover at least a metre above the seabed to avoid disturbing the substrate or scaring away camouflaged individuals. Scan the sand channels, seagrass margins, and reef drop-off bases for the subtle diamond or spade-like outline of a buried animal, looking specifically for raised, blinking eyes and pumping spiracles. Never plunge directly downwards onto an animal; instead, approach along a low, diagonal trajectory, moving slowly and exhaling gently to minimise sudden exhaust-bubble noise. If the guitarfish is resting, keep a respectful distance of two to three metres and never touch, herd, or block its direct path of escape toward deeper water. For underwater photographers, a wide-angle or medium zoom lens is ideal. Utilise natural ambient lighting whenever possible, positioning external strobes far out to the sides with diffusers to prevent backscatter from suspended sand grains. Always observe strict no-touch marine life protocols.

Best Season

Optimal encounters with guitarfishes depend on the specific region and species. In the Red Sea, particularly around the southern reefs and sandy flats of Marsa Alam and Ras Mohammed, sightings are most dependable during the summer and autumn months from June to October, when warmer sea temperatures draw benthic elasmobranchs into shallow lagoons and coastal bays. In the Eastern Pacific and the Sea of Cortez, species such as the banded guitarfish are frequently observed between July and November when visibility is at its peak and water temperatures range between 24°C and 29°C. Divers heading to southern Africa, including Sodwana Bay and Aliwal Shoal, will find peak conditions from November to April during the austral summer, when warm Mozambique currents encourage these rays to patrol the sand interfaces. For Mediterranean sightings, late spring and early summer (May to July) offer the best chance in protected marine areas.

Habitat

Guitarfishes primarily inhabit shallow inshore and continental shelf waters, typically ranging from intertidal depths down to approximately 100 metres, although several species occasionally venture onto deeper continental slopes past 200 metres. They demonstrate a strong affinity for soft bottom habitats, favouring expansive sand plains, muddy estuaries, sheltered bays, mangrove channels, and vibrant seagrass meadows immediately adjacent to coral or rocky reef structures. These environments provide both abundant benthic prey and ideal sediment for burrowing camouflage. The waters this animal calls home span the tropical and warm-temperate regions of the globe, including the Red Sea, the Arabian Gulf, the wider Indo-Pacific region, coastal West Africa, the Mediterranean Basin, and the Eastern Pacific from California down to Peru.

Diet

Guitarfishes are strictly carnivorous bottom-feeders that rely on an impressive sensory toolkit to locate concealed prey within the sediment. Their diet consists primarily of benthic invertebrates, such as crabs, mantis shrimps, prawns, polychaete worms, and bivalve molluscs, alongside small demersal teleost fish, including gobies, blennies, and flatfishes. To pinpoint prey hidden beneath the sand, guitarfishes utilise specialized electro-receptors known as the ampullae of Lorenzini arranged across the underside of their rostral disc, capable of detecting the faint bioelectric fields generated by buried animals. Once an animal is detected, the guitarfish pins it against the substrate with its head disc before maneuvering its underslung mouth over the target. Equipped with pavement-like bands of small, blunt, molariform teeth, they crush hard-shelled crustaceans and molluscs with immense jaw pressure, foraging most actively during twilight and darkness.
