In younger specimens and during active swimming, these bars can darken dramatically or fade into shimmering silvery tones depending on stress levels and environmental lighting. When photographing pilotfish, use a wide-angle lens with fast shutter speeds (1/250s or faster) to freeze the rapid movement of the fish and their hosts in open sunlight. They are strongly associated with drifting offshore macro-habitats, including floating kelp, debris lines, buoys, and pelagic sharks cruising open oceanic trenches.

Diet

The pilotfish is an opportunistic pelagic feeder possessing a diverse, scavenging-oriented diet. Primarily, it sustains itself on the ectoparasites clinging to the dermis, gill slits, and oral cavities of its megafauna hosts, performing essential cleaning duties. In addition to parasitic crustacea, pilotfish feed voraciously on scraps of flesh, offal, and floating detritus left behind when their predatory hosts tear into prey. When living in association with drifting flotsam or drifting freely in open water, they prey upon small pelagic crustaceans, pelagic fish larvae, hyperiid amphipods, and gelatinous zooplankton.
