Its upper body features a rich brown or olive hue that contrasts sharply with a pale, whitish belly, demarcated by prominent dark brown stripes extending along the upper and lower flanks. Radiating outwards from its large, iridescent blue-green eyes are vibrant turquoise and electric-blue lines that create a striking 'sunburst' pattern. The caudal fin is framed above and below by crisp, dark margins, and the fish uses delicate, translucent pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins to propel itself through the water column with remarkable agility and hovering precision. Approaching a sharpnose puffer requires calm, disciplined diving techniques and impeccable neutral buoyancy. Because these small fish are naturally skittish, rapid movements or direct head-on approaches will cause them to dart into the nearest coral head. Hover stationary just off the reef floor, avoiding contact with fragile benthic life, and allow the puffer to grow accustomed to your presence; their innate curiosity often brings them back out into the open. Macro photographers should equip a 60mm or 100mm macro lens and set twin strobes on low to medium power with diffusers to capture the iridescent blue facial markings without blowing out the highlights. Never corner or harass a pufferfish in an attempt to make it inflate, as inflating causes extreme physiological stress and consumes vital energy reserves. Ensure your trim is horizontal and watch your fin kicks to avoid kicking up silt in shallow reef zones.

Best Season

The sharpnose puffer can be encountered year-round throughout its subtropical and tropical Atlantic range, but peak diving conditions vary by destination. In the Caribbean and Bahamas, the calmest seas and clearest visibility occur from December to May, offering prime conditions for reef exploration. In Cozumel and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, May to September brings warm water and exceptional light for photography, despite occasional summer showers. For divers visiting the Canary Islands or Madeira, the summer and autumn months from July to November deliver the warmest sea temperatures and optimal macro diving conditions. In Bermuda, the main diving season runs from May to October, when water temperatures rise comfortably and reef fish activity is at its most vibrant.

Habitat

The sharpnose puffer inhabits tropical and warm subtropical marine environments throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Divers can regularly spot this species across the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and along the coast of Florida south to Brazil, as well as around oceanic islands in the eastern Atlantic such as Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Cape Verde. It thrives predominantly in shallow, sunlit waters from the surface down to approximately 40 metres, though it is most abundant between 1 and 20 metres. Sharpnose puffers favour structured habitats, including patch reefs, spur-and-groove coral formations, dense seagrass beds of *Thalassia testudinum*, and rocky shorelines. They are also common residents on shallow artificial reefs, shipwrecks, and harbour pilings, where abundant micro-crevices provide essential shelter from predators.

Diet

The sharpnose puffer is an opportunistic omnivore with a distinct preference for benthic invertebrates. Armed with four fused, beak-like teeth that grow continuously throughout its life, it easily crushes the hard protective shells of its prey. Its varied diet predominantly consists of small crabs, polychaete worms, bivalves, gastropod molluscs, and the tips of branching corals and sponges. It also grazes on red and green filamentous algae, seagrass blades, and occasionally consumes tunicates and tiny echinoderms. Foraging is exclusively diurnal; throughout the day, the puffer moves steadily along the reef substrate, using its protruding snout to probe into rubble, sand pockets, and macroalgae tufts. It often hovers motionlessly above a promising crevice before executing a rapid, decisive nip to extract hidden prey from the coral structure.
