Because they rely entirely on camouflage for protection, these fish rarely flee immediately, allowing patient divers to settle gently nearby on bare sand. Maintain your body horizontal and stay low to the substrate, approaching at eye level rather than descending from directly above, which simulates an approaching predator. For underwater photographers, lizardfishes provide extraordinary portrait and macro opportunities; a 60mm or 100mm macro lens is ideal for capturing the intricate patterns of the iris and the terrifying needle-like teeth visible in their slightly ajar jaws.
