At rest, the fish appears relatively unassuming, adorned in mottled shades of sandy brown, grey, and olive with dark rosettes that provide superlative camouflage against the seabed. Its head is encased in hard, bony plates equipped with prominent preopercular spines. However, when alarmed or displaying, the flying gurnard undergoes a breathtaking transformation: it unfurls enormous, fan-shaped pectoral fins edged with iridescent, neon-blue margins and intricate, spotted patterns that resemble the vivid eye-spots of an exotic butterfly. When approaching a flying gurnard, strict buoyancy control is essential to avoid kicking up the fine silt and sand of its benthic habitat. Approach extremely slowly from a low angle, staying parallel to the seabed rather than descending directly from above, which the fish perceives as an overhead predator. Keep a respectful distance of at least one to two metres; if pressured or cornered, the fish will either fold its fins and bolt across the sand or become unnecessarily stressed. For underwater photographers, a wide-angle lens with close-focus capability or a versatile mid-range zoom (such as a 24-70mm equivalent) is ideal to capture the massive span of its pectoral fins in full frame. Set your strobes wide and slightly pulled back to illuminate the vivid blue margins of the fins without causing harsh backscatter from suspended sediment. Avoid touching the fish, as their bony cranial spines can be sharp.

Best Season

In the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic flying gurnard (*Dactylopterus volitans*) can be encountered year-round. Prime diving conditions in Bonaire, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas typically peak from December to May, when calm surface conditions and exceptional visibility make sand-flat muck diving particularly rewarding. In the Mediterranean Sea, warmer water temperatures and peak visibility occur between June and September, offering the best window to spot gurnards patrolling shallow coastal bays in Malta and the Greek islands. For Indo-Pacific species such as *Dactyloptena orientalis*, world-class muck diving destinations like the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia and Anilao in the Philippines yield consistent, exceptional encounters throughout the year, with optimal conditions between October and April when macro critters are prolific.

Habitat

Flying gurnards are strictly benthic fish that inhabit coastal waters from very shallow shallows of just 1 metre down to depths of roughly 100 metres, though they are most frequently encountered between 3 and 30 metres. They strongly prefer soft, open substrates, including extensive sand flats, muddy bottoms, rubble channels, and lush seagrass meadows adjacent to coral or rocky reefs. They occasionally frequent the sandy perimeter of shallow shipwrecks and harbour mouths. Diet

Flying gurnards are specialised carnivorous bottom-feeders that forage almost exclusively along the benthos. Their diet consists primarily of small benthic crustaceans, including crabs, shrimp, amphipods, and stomatopods, alongside small bivalves, marine worms, and small bottom-dwelling fish. To hunt, the gurnard uses the free, articulated anterior rays of its pelvic fins to slowly crawl across the seafloor, probing into loose sand, mud, and gravel. These modified fin rays act as tactile and chemosensory tools, detecting vibrations and chemical cues from hidden prey buried beneath the sediment. Once an organism is located, the gurnard uses its blunt snout to root through the substrate, rapidly snapping up the exposed quarry with its small, conical teeth.
