Characterised by a laterally compressed, elongated body, this exquisite species possesses a pale blue to turquoise base colour adorned with neat longitudinal rows of bright orange to yellowish-orange spots. Its most striking morphological feature is a slender, tubular snout tipped with a diminutive, upturned mouth specifically adapted for delicate precision feeding. A dark blotch typically marks the caudal fin, and the prominent dorsal spine—situated just above the large, expressive eyes—can be locked erect alongside a ventral flap to wedge the fish into coral crevices or deter potential predators. At night, they exhibit a fascinating roosting behaviour: they nestle head-down amongst branching corals, clamping onto the skeleton with their teeth and erecting their dorsal spines to anchor securely against nocturnal currents and prowling predators.
