These streamlined, torpedo-shaped marine teleosts feature a deeply forked, hypocercal caudal fin—where the lower lobe is considerably longer than the upper—and strikingly enlarged pectoral fins that unfurl like iridescent, translucent wings. Some species within the family also possess expanded pelvic fins, earning them the moniker 'four-winged' flying fish. Their coloration exemplifies classic open-ocean countershading: a brilliant iridescent dark blue or steel-grey dorsal surface that effortlessly blends into deep pelagic depths when viewed from above, transitioning smoothly to a clean, silvery-white underside that conceals them against sunlit surface waters from beneath. This behaviour is more frequent during daylight hours. Regarding reproduction, flying fish are oviparous, releasing numerous small, spherical eggs. Spawning often occurs in pelagic waters, with some species laying eggs attached to floating debris, seaweed, or sargassum via adhesive filaments, while others are broadcast spawners. The spawning season is generally tied to warmer waters, varying geographically but often extending through spring and summer. Clutch sizes can be substantial, with individual females producing thousands of eggs. Incubation periods are relatively short, typically a few days to a week or two, depending on water temperature. Juveniles often differ in appearance from adults, sometimes possessing barbels or more ornate fins, and grow rapidly, reaching sexual maturity within one to two years.
