Instead of typical overlapping fish scales, their skin is covered with minute, rough spinules that historically earned them their namesake texture resembling cured leather or sandpaper. Their most distinguishing anatomical feature is a prominent, erectile first dorsal spine positioned directly above or just behind the eyes, which can be locked into an upright position by a smaller secondary spine acting as a trigger mechanism. Their mouths are small, terminal, and equipped with specialised, fused incisiform teeth designed for nibbling and crushing encrusting organisms. Colouration varies dramatically across species and sexes, spanning subtle cryptic mottling in browns and olive-greens to spectacular, vibrant geometric patterns, vibrant yellows, electric blues, and intricate reticulated networks seen in tropical and temperate reef varieties alike. Ecologically, leatherjackets occupy an important niche across tropical, subtropical, and temperate oceans worldwide, with their greatest diversity concentrated in the waters of the Indo-Pacific and Australasia. Most species are benthic or demersal, closely tied to structural complexity such as rocky reefs, coral heads, macroalgal beds, and expansive seagrass meadows. They are generally solitary or occur in territorial breeding pairs, though some species form loose aggregations during spawning events or around prolific feeding areas. To properly observe leatherjackets, divers should maintain neutral buoyancy and approach with slow, unhurried movements, as sudden fin kicks or rapid advances will cause them to retreat into dense cover or lock themselves within rocky crevices. When photographing these fish, utilise a macro lens or a close-focus wide-angle setup to capture their intricate dermal denticles, vibrant iris rings, and fine dorsal spine detail. Position dual strobes with diffusers on low to medium power to illuminate their subtle coloration without washing out the complex textures of their skin. Avoid touching or cornering the fish; their locked dorsal spine can easily entangle in delicate marine life or cause accidental punctures if handled. Maintain exceptional trim when hovering over fragile sponge gardens and kelp beds where they frequently forage.

The best seasons to dive with leatherjackets vary by region, but temperate and subtropical waters yield consistent sightings year-round. In southern Australia, exploring the kelp forests around Sydney, Melbourne, and Tasmania is exceptional between December and May, when water temperatures are warmer and underwater visibility peaks. Across the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea, tropical monacanthids can be encountered throughout the year, with optimal sea conditions prevailing from June to November. In the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific archipelagos of Indonesia and the Philippines, sightings are reliable across all dive seasons, particularly in sheltered lagoon environments from April to October. For target species like the fan-bellied leatherjacket, temperate winter months from June to August in southern latitudes often bring larger individuals into shallower, accessible depths.

Habitat

Leatherjackets inhabit a diverse spectrum of marine environments across tropical, subtropical, and temperate seas, spanning the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, with remarkable species endemism in the coastal waters of Australia. They occur across a broad bathymetric range, from intertidal rock pools and shallow estuaries just 1 metre deep down to deep continental shelf reefs exceeding 200 metres. However, the majority of diver encounters occur between 5 and 30 metres. Preferred substrates include thriving coral reefs, dense macroalgal kelp forests, expansive seagrass meadows, vertical sponge-encrusted drop-offs, and artificial structures like jetty pylons and historic shipwrecks, where abundant encrusting prey and protective hiding spots abound.

Diet

Leatherjackets are opportunistic omnivores and specialised carnivores with a diet predominantly composed of sessile and encrusting benthic invertebrates. Using their robust, chisel-like teeth and powerful jaw muscles, they scrape and crop organisms directly from hard substrates. Primary dietary components include sponges, hydroids, bryozoans, ascidians, gorgonians, and small colonial anemones. They also readily consume benthic polychaete worms, small crustaceans such as amphipods and isopods, molluscs, and various forms of filamentous and red macroalgae. Certain larger species incorporate sea urchins and jellyfish into their foraging routine. Leatherjackets feed predominantly during daylight hours, methodically inspecting reef surfaces, kelp fronds, and seagrass blades with focused visual precision before executing targeted bites to detach resilient prey items.
