
Leatherjackets, known scientifically within the family Monacanthidae and frequently referred to as filefish, are characterised by their laterally compressed, deep bodies and remarkably abrasive skin. Instead of typical overlapping fish scales, their skin is covered with minute, rough spinules that historically earned them their namesake texture resembling cured leather or sandpaper. Their most distinguishing anatomical feature is a prominent, erectile first dorsal spine positioned directly above or just behind the eyes, which can be locked into an upright position by a smaller secondary spine acting as a trigger mechanism. Their mouths are small, terminal, and equipped with specialised, fused incisiform teeth designed for nibbling and crushing encrusting organisms. Colouration varies dramatically across species and sexes, spanning subtle cryptic mottling in browns and olive-greens to spectacular, vibrant geometric patterns, vibrant yellows, electric blues, and intricate reticulated networks seen in tropical and temperate reef varieties alike. Ecologically, leatherjackets occupy an important niche across tropical, subtropical, and temperate oceans worldwide, with their greatest diversity concentrated in the waters of the Indo-Pacific and Australasia. Most species are benthic or demersal, closely tied to structural complexity such as rocky reefs, coral heads, macroalgal beds, and expansive seagrass meadows. They are generally solitary or occur in territorial breeding pairs, though some species form loose aggregations during spawning events or around prolific feeding areas. Many monacanthids possess exceptional camouflage abilities, not only altering their chromatic pigmentation to blend into their surroundings but also physically mimicking floating drifting kelp or blades of seagrass by adopting head-down swimming postures and undulating their dorsal and anal fins synchronously. For scuba divers, encountering a leatherjacket is an exercise in observing slow-paced, deliberate marine life behaviour. Rather than darting rapidly away, these fish often rely on their intricate camouflage, hovering motionless amidst gorgonians, kelp stipes, or sponges while tracking the diver with independently mobile eyes. Their calm, inquisitive demeanour makes them wonderful subjects for underwater photography, particularly for those who appreciate macro details, texture, and subtle behavioural interactions. Watching a leatherjacket carefully graze on hydroids or wedge itself securely into a narrow crevice using its locked dorsal spine provides divers with a memorable glimpse into the intricate adaptations of reef-dwelling teleosts.
