
Marine angelfish (family Pomacanthidae) are among the most striking and conspicuous inhabitants of tropical reefs worldwide. Found across the tropical Atlantic, Indian, and western Pacific Oceans, these fish are renowned for their brilliant coloration and deep, laterally compressed bodies. Ranging from small pygmy species under 15 centimetres to large specimens up to 60 centimetres in length, they fill a diverse array of ecological niches across coral reef ecosystems. Although similar in appearance to butterflyfishes, marine angelfish are readily distinguished by the presence of strong preopercle spines located on the lower edge of their gill covers. This anatomical feature gives the family its name, derived from the Greek words poma (cover) and akantha (thorn). Many species also feature elegant streamer-like extensions on their soft dorsal and anal fins, paired with relatively large pectoral fins and rounded to lunate tail fins. Angelfish display remarkable colour shifts between juvenile and adult life stages. Young individuals often exhibit striking neon or electric blue patterns with distinct vertical lines or spots that fade into completely different adult coloration as they mature. All marine angelfish are protogynous hermaphrodites. In species that form harems consisting of a dominant male and several females, the loss of the primary male prompts the dominant female to transition into a fully functional male to maintain the social hierarchy. Angelfish, belonging to the family Pomacanthidae, typically exhibit varied social behaviours, ranging from solitary individuals to monogamous pairs, and occasionally small harems or groups depending on the species and habitat. They are predominantly diurnal, actively foraging for sponges, algae, and small invertebrates during daylight hours and seeking shelter in reef crevices at night. Reproduction in angelfish is primarily through broadcast spawning. During this process, which often occurs at dusk, a male and female pair rise in the water column, releasing gametes simultaneously into the open water where fertilisation takes place externally. While a distinct spawning season is not universally documented for all species, it often correlates with lunar cycles in some. The fertilised eggs are pelagic and drift with currents, eventually hatching into larval forms. These larvae undergo a planktonic stage before settling as juveniles onto the reef. Clutch sizes can be substantial, though precise numbers vary widely and are often unquantified in wild populations. Development to sexual maturity can take several years. For scuba divers, marine angelfish are a highlight of reef dives. While smaller species and certain shy varieties hide among coral crevices, many larger species are notably bold and seemingly fearless, occasionally swimming directly toward divers to inspect them. During the day, they actively roam the reef in search of food or tend to established territories, before retreating into deep nooks, caves, and overhangs when night falls.
