Perfect your neutral buoyancy to maintain position in open water without sculling, avoiding accidental contact with fragile reef walls or downcurrent drift. Move with slow, non-threatening motions; abrupt fin kicks will cause the school to split and disperse. For underwater photographers, a wide-angle or fisheye lens is essential to capture the scale of massive aggregations. Habitat

The Pacific creolefish is native to the warm-temperate and tropical waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. It is exceptionally abundant around offshore oceanic islands and isolated archipelagos, notably the Galápagos Islands, Cocos Island, Malpelo Island, and the Revillagigedo Archipelago. This species thrives in depths ranging from 5 to over 70 metres, showing a marked preference for vertical drop-offs, exposed rocky pinnacles, and current-swept boulder slopes where oceanic upwellings deliver rich supplies of plankton. While it forages openly in blue water several metres above the substrate during the day, it remains closely associated with rocky structures for nighttime shelter.

Diet

Departing dramatically from the typical piscivorous and crustacean-hunting habits of benthic groupers, the Pacific creolefish is a specialized diurnal planktivore. Positioned in the water column upstream of rocky reefs and pinnacles, it utilizes its closely spaced gill rakers and small, highly protrusible jaws to pluck individual zooplankton from current streams. Its diet predominantly comprises pelagic tunicates (such as salps and larvaceans), calanoid copepods, hyperiid amphipods, crab zoeae, pteropods, and tiny pelagic fish eggs or larvae.
