Colonial ascidians, frequently termed compound sea squirts, are fascinating marine invertebrates belonging to the subphylum Tunicata. Unlike their solitary relatives, colonial ascidians consist of hundreds or thousands of tiny individual organisms known as zooids, typically measuring just a few millimetres in length. These zooids are embedded together within a shared, gelatinous or leathery matrix called a tunic, which is largely composed of tunicin, a substance chemically similar to plant cellulose. Morphologically, they exhibit an astonishing variety of forms, ranging from flat, encrusting sheets to bulbous cushions, lobed masses, and delicate, pedunculate stalks. Their colour palette is equally diverse, displaying vivid shades of sapphire blue, emerald green, canary yellow, translucent white, and deep violet. In many species, individual zooids possess their own incurrent oral siphons but share common excurrent atrial siphons, often arranged in exquisite geometric patterns resembling stars, rings, or meandering rosettes across the colony surface. Ecologically, colonial ascidians occupy a critical niche on hard marine substrates worldwide, from polar shallows to tropical coral reefs. They reproduce both sexually, producing short-lived free-swimming larvae that resemble minute tadpoles, and asexually through sophisticated budding processes that allow colonies to expand rapidly across available surfaces. Despite their sedentary, plant-like adult appearance, ascidians are chordates; their larvae possess a rudimentary notochord, dorsal nerve cord, and pharyngeal slits, making them surprisingly close evolutionary relatives to vertebrates. Many tropical colonial ascidians, such as members of the genus Didemnum or Lissoclinum, host photosynthesising symbiotic cyanobacteria or algae (such as Prochloron) within their tissues, imparting bright green hues and contributing metabolic energy to the colony while occupying competitive reef wall space. For scuba divers, encountering colonial ascidians is an exercise in appreciating the intricate macro-architecture of the reef. Far from being inert blobs, these vibrant encrustations pulse with continuous microscopic activity as they cycle surrounding seawater. Approaching a colony closely reveals the delicate, rhythmic movement of translucent siphons and the hypnotic, mathematical symmetry of their arrangements. They often carpet shaded overhangs, vertical drop-offs, and artificial structures, providing a microhabitat for specialised predators such as colourful flatworms, nudibranchs, and tiny amphipods. Observing and photographing colonial ascidians requires flawless buoyancy control, as these delicate colonies often thrive on steep vertical walls, under reef overhangs, or on fragile coral rubble where unintended fin kicks can cause severe damage. Divers should hover motionless and use slow, controlled breathing to examine the fine detail of individual zooids. For underwater photographers, a dedicated macro lens (such as 60mm or 105mm) is essential to capture the hypnotic geometric patterns and translucent siphons. Use twin external strobes angled inward to highlight internal textures and eliminate harsh shadows. Ensure a narrow aperture (f/16 to f/22) for sufficient depth of field across the colony’s curved surfaces. Avoid touching the tunic or generating strong water turbulence, as zooids will rapidly contract and close their siphons, losing their photogenic, open appearance.

Best Season

Colonial ascidians can be observed year-round in tropical waters, but conditions are optimal when seas are calmest and underwater visibility is at its peak. In Indonesia (notably Raja Ampat and Komodo), the best diving windows run from October to April and April to November respectively. In the Philippines, visiting between November and May offers superb conditions across the Visayas and Anilao. In the Red Sea, the months of September to November and March to May provide pleasant water temperatures and minimal surge. For temperate species in Australia or the Mediterranean, summer months from December to March (Southern Hemisphere) or June to September (Northern Hemisphere) bring clearer water and active colonial growth.

Habitat

Colonial ascidians inhabit a broad spectrum of marine environments across all major ocean basins, from the icy waters of the Arctic and Southern Oceans to temperate seas and tropical coral ecosystems. They are strictly benthic and require solid substrate for larval settlement, flourishing on coral reef walls, rocky ledges, boulder slopes, mangrove roots, and artificial structures such as jetty pylons and shipwrecks. While some species extend into abyssal depths, the highest diversity is concentrated in shallow to moderate depths between 2 and 40 metres, particularly in areas sheltered from intense wave surge yet exposed to steady, nutrient-carrying tidal currents. Divers will find especially prolific and colourful colonial ascidian communities throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Coral Triangle, the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Caribbean Sea.

Diet

Colonial ascidians are dedicated, non-selective ciliary suspension filter feeders. Each individual zooid within the colony draws surrounding water into its oral siphon using microscopic cilia lining the interior of an expanded, basket-like pharynx. Suspended organic particles, including bacterioplankton, microalgae, unicellular flagellates, phytoplankton, and free-floating organic detritus, are trapped in an ultra-fine, continuously moving mucus net secreted by an internal groove called the endostyle. This nutrient-rich mucus sheet is rolled into a cord and transported directly into the digestive tract, while the filtered water is expelled through the atrial siphon. Feeding occurs continuously around the clock as long as ambient currents and water clarity permit. Additionally, many tropical colonial species gain supplemental nutrition from metabolic by-products produced by photosynthesising symbiotic cyanobacteria embedded in their tunics.
