
The painted tunicate (Clavelina picta) is one of the most aesthetically striking invertebrate species found on tropical Atlantic reefs. Growing in elegant, densely clustered colonies, each individual zooid possesses a translucent, vase-like outer tunic made of a cellulose-like substance called tunicin. These delicate bodies are vividly accentuated with brilliant margins of violet, purple, or deep reddish-pink outlining the rims of both the terminal branchial siphon and the lateral atrial siphon. Fine longitudinal lines of white, yellow, or carmine-red often trace the internal pharyngeal basket, lending the organism an intricate, hand-painted appearance. Individual zooids typically measure between one and three centimetres in height, but colonial clusters can encompass dozens or even hundreds of interconnected individuals anchored firmly to a common base. Ecologically, painted tunicates are highly efficient, sessile filter feeders that thrive in areas with vigorous water movement. Despite their primitive, plant-like outward appearance, tunicates belong to the phylum Chordata, sharing an evolutionary lineage with vertebrates due to their free-swimming larval stage possessing a rudimentary notochord and dorsal nerve cord. Clavelina picta is primarily distributed across the western Atlantic, notably abundant in the clear subtropical and tropical waters of Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, and throughout the Caribbean Sea. Within reef ecosystems, these organisms act as vital natural purifiers, filtering vast volumes of seawater to consume suspended micro-organisms and particulate organic detritus, while also offering microhabitats for tiny commensal crustaceans like copepods and amphipods. Clavelina picta, commonly known as the Painted Tunicate, exhibits a colonial lifestyle, forming aggregations of zooids that share a common tunic but maintain individual siphons for filter feeding. These sessile organisms are typically found attached to hard substrates in shallow, tropical and subtropical waters, actively filtering plankton throughout the day. Reproduction in this species is primarily sexual, with individuals being hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female gonads. Broadcast spawning is the documented mode of reproduction, whereby gametes are released into the water column for external fertilisation. While specific spawning seasons can vary regionally, reproduction generally occurs during warmer months. The fertilised eggs develop into free-swimming, tadpole-like larvae which are lecithotrophic, meaning they do not feed, and are responsible for dispersal. These larvae have a short pelagic phase before settling onto a suitable substrate and undergoing metamorphosis into a sessile adult zooid, which then buds asexually to form a colony. The time to maturity is not precisely quantified but rapid growth and budding are characteristic features. For scuba divers, encountering a vibrant cluster of painted tunicates is a captivating visual treat, particularly for macro enthusiasts and underwater naturalists. They frequently adorn vertical drop-offs, shaded overhangs, gorgonian stems, and the rusted hulls of historic shipwrecks, glowing like luminous bouquets of blown glass under dive torches. Their delicate geometry and vivid contrasting pigments make them prized macro photography subjects.
