Ascidiacea, commonly known as ascidians or sea squirts, are sac-like marine invertebrates belonging to the subphylum Tunicata within the phylum Chordata. Found in oceans across the globe, these animals derive their name from their distinctive outer body covering, known as a tunic or test. Unlike the calcareous shells of molluscs, this tunic is composed of living tissue reinforced with proteins, calcium salts, and cellulose—a complex polysaccharide rarely produced by animals. Adult sea squirts exhibit three distinct growth forms: solitary individuals, social species that grow in clumped clusters attached at their bases, and compound (colonial) ascidians. In compound species, numerous tiny individuals called zooids are embedded within a shared gelatinous test, sometimes sharing a centralized exhalent opening while maintaining separate inhalent siphons. Individual sea squirts range in size from 0.5 to 10 cm, displaying a wide variety of shapes including cylindrical, rounded, vase-like, or encrusting forms. Sessile in their adult stage, sea squirts attach firmly to hard surfaces such as rocks, shells, corals, and artificial harbour structures. At the unattached upper end of the animal lie two openings called siphons. The larger oral siphon draws seawater into an internal pharyngeal chamber, while the atrial siphon expels water, digestive waste, and gametes. When removed from the water or squeezed at low tide, the sudden contraction of their body wall forcefully ejects water jets from these siphons, giving the animals their common name. Though adult sea squirts appear simple, they represent a critical evolutionary link between invertebrates and vertebrates. Their short-lived, free-swimming larvae are lecithotrophic (non-feeding) tadpoles that clearly demonstrate chordate traits, including a dorsal tubular nerve cord, a notochord, a post-anal tail, and pharyngeal gill slits. Upon attaching to a suitable surface, the larva undergoes metamorphosis, absorbing its tail and notochord while developing into a sessile filter feeder. For scuba divers, sea squirts add remarkable texture and vibrant colour to underwater landscapes. They frequently blanket vertical cave walls, shaded reef overhangs, and wharf pilings in rich growth, serving both as beautiful photographic subjects and key bioindicators that accumulate environmental pollutants through continuous water filtration.

When diving around reefs, wall sites, and artificial structures covered with sea squirts, accurate buoyancy control is essential to avoid disturbing these sessile invertebrates. Because sea squirts are permanently fixed to substrate such as rocks, cave walls, and wharf pilings, divers can easily approach them for macro photography without causing stress, provided no physical contact is made with the organism or its surrounding habitat. Divers should refrain from touching or pressing against sea squirts. Touching their outer tunic causes the animal to contract its body wall and clamp its siphons closed, halting its continuous filter-feeding activity. To best appreciate their intricate biology, shine a dive light directly into the wide oral siphon to inspect the ciliated pharynx and its grid-like pharyngeal stigmata within. Encounters are most dramatic in areas with high tidal flow, harbour entrances, shaded overhangs, and cave walls where diverse communities of solitary and colonial ascidians thrive alongside sponges and bryozoans. Take care not to kick up sediment with fin strokes near encrusting colonies, as heavy silt can clog their delicate mucus filtering nets.

Best Season

Sea squirts can be observed by scuba divers throughout the year across all marine environments worldwide. Because adult ascidians are sessile organisms permanently fixed to hard underwater surfaces—including rocky reefs, coral reefs, wharf piles, seawalls, and shell beds—they do not migrate or undergo seasonal movements, ensuring constant presence across all seasons. In temperate regions like New Zealand and southern Australia, as well as in tropical marine zones, ascidian diversity and population density remain consistent year-round. Dive planning is therefore guided by local weather conditions, water visibility, and tidal schedules rather than biological seasonality. Port entrances, harbour channels, and coastal reefs experiencing strong tidal currents offer peak viewing opportunities, as moving water encourages ascidians to keep their siphons wide open for feeding. While their non-feeding tadpole larvae are short-lived and tiny, adult solitary and colonial forms are visible during any month of the year. Divers seeking to explore biofouling communities on artificial structures or natural cave walls can reliably encounter sea squirts on day or night dives in any season.

Habitat

Sea squirts inhabit all marine environments globally, ranging from shallow coastal waters, harbour estuaries, and intertidal rocky shores down to deep oceanic trenches. They are strictly marine organisms, requiring salinities above 2.5% (20‰), and cannot survive in freshwater habitats. Across these zones, ascidians populate diverse reef microhabitats, particularly cave walls, overhangs, and areas with high tidal water movement. As sessile adults, sea squirts require a solid substrate for attachment. The lower surface of the animal is ridged or pitted, and some species possess root-like extensions to firmly grip surfaces such as rocks, dead coral, shells, and coarse substrates. Highly diverse native species often thrive on reefs at the mouth of harbours, coastal channels, and shaded underwater rock faces. Sea squirts are also prolific colonisers of artificial structures. They settle in great abundance on wharf piles, seawalls, ship hulls, and aquaculture lines, forming dense fouling communities. Invasive sea squirt species frequently dominate these artificial habitats due to their fast growth and rapid larval settlement, outcompeting local organisms for space and available planktonic food.

Diet

Sea squirts are sessile filter feeders that extract micro-organisms and suspended organic matter from the water column continuously throughout the day and night. Water is actively drawn into the body through the primary oral (buccal) siphon via the synchronized beating of cilia that line the large internal pharynx. Inside the pharynx, a specialized groove called the endostyle produces a continuous net of mucus. Flagella along the endostyle margins sweep this mucus sheet across grid-like perforations in the pharyngeal wall known as stigmata. The mucus net, which features microscopic pore sizes between 0.1 and 1 micrometre, efficiently traps planktonic particles, microalgae, and bacteria ranging from 0.5 to 10 micrometres in diameter. The food-laden mucus sheet is directed into a dorsal groove, which transports the trapped nutrients down into the esophagus and stomach. Digestive enzymes within the stomach break down the food particles, after which the intestine processes the nutrients. Unused waste passes through the rectum and anus into an internal water chamber (atrium) or cloaca, exiting the body through the smaller atrial siphon along with the expelled water current.
