
The chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius) is an iconic, archaic cephalopod often referred to as a living fossil, possessing an anatomy that has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. It is instantly recognised by its smooth, coiled, planospiral shell that displays striking reddish-brown radiating zebra-like stripes over a creamy porcelain-white background. Internally, the shell is divided into progressive, gas-filled chambers partitioned by nacreous septa and connected by a vascular tube termed the siphuncle. Unlike their soft-bodied cousins—the octopuses, squids, and cuttlefishes—nautiluses retain this external calcareous fortress into which they can fully retract. They lack suckered arms, instead bearing up to ninety slender, retractile tentacles arranged around a dark, leathery hood that acts as a protective trapdoor when the animal withdraws. Large, primitive pinhole camera-like eyes sit on the sides of the head, lacking solid lenses but perfectly capable of discerning light gradients in the dark mesopelagic realm. Operating primarily across the deep fore-reef slopes of the tropical Indo-Pacific, the chambered nautilus is a slow-moving, solitary nomad. It relies on a delicate balance of fluid and gas regulated within its shell chambers to maintain near-neutral buoyancy, propelling itself gracefully backwards using a dual-flapped siphon via water jet propulsion. By day, these animals shelter in the chilly, high-pressure depths between 300 and 700 metres to avoid visual teleost predators such as large groupers and sharks. As twilight falls, they embark on a significant diel vertical migration, rising into shallower reef zones to forage under the cover of darkness where temperatures remain tolerable before retreating to the abyss at dawn. While not considered social, multiple individuals may be observed in feeding aggregations. Its reproductive strategy involves internal fertilisation following a complex courtship and mating ritual. Nautilus are oviparous, with females laying a small clutch of large, yolky eggs, usually one at a time, attaching them to hard substrates in deep water. The exact spawning season is not well documented, though evidence suggests it may occur year-round. Incubation periods are notably long, potentially exceeding a year, though precise durations remain uncertain in the wild. Juveniles hatch as miniature versions of the adults, bypassing a larval stage, and develop slowly, reaching sexual maturity only after several years, perhaps around 10-15 years of age. This slow growth and late maturity contribute to their vulnerability. For scuba divers, encountering a chambered nautilus in the wild is a rare and almost otherworldly privilege, feeling more like stepping into the Palaeozoic era than a standard coral reef exploration. Seeing this geometric marvel hover effortlessly against the ink-black backdrop of an oceanic wall evokes profound awe. Its smooth, rhythmic pulses and delicate sensory tentacles brushing the substrate represent an ancient evolutionary lineage that survived multiple mass extinction events, making any encounter a deeply memorable highlight of a diver's underwater journey.
