Each individual zooid possesses a translucent, barrel-shaped body, typically measuring between one and three centimetres in height, supported by a short stalk attached to a communal base. The tunic—a protective outer cellulose-like mantle—is crystalline and glass-like, revealing the creature’s internal anatomy. Vivid violet, purple, or reddish-magenta rings encircle both the prominent incurrent oral siphon at the top and the excurrent atrial siphon located slightly lower on the side. Through coordinated ciliary action, each zooid draws vast volumes of seawater through its body, filtering out microscopic organic matter before discharging clean water. They are common across the shallow and mesophotic reefs of the tropical Western Atlantic, the Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean Sea.
