
Sea hares are large, fascinating marine gastropod molluscs belonging to the clade Aplysiomorpha (order Anaspidea), named for the prominent pair of sensory tentacles atop their heads that closely resemble rabbit ears. These distinctive structures, known as rhinophores, are chemosensory organs used to detect scents and waterborne chemical cues. Sea hares possess soft, fleshy, and somewhat plump bodies featuring large, wing-like lateral extensions of their mantle called parapodia. These parapodia fold over the dorsal surface to protect an internal, thin, translucent shell remnant made of protein and calcium. Their coloration is remarkably diverse and cryptic, ranging from mottled olive greens, chocolate browns, and sandy beiges to vibrant purples and patterns adorned with rings or spots, often closely mimicking the specific algae and substrate upon which they dwell. Depending on the species, they range from small, delicate specimens of a few centimetres to colossal varieties such as the California black sea hare (Aplysia vaccaria), the largest of all known gastropod species. Ecologically, sea hares are critical benthic herbivores distributed globally across temperate, subtropical, and tropical shallow marine environments. They spend their days crawling methodically over hard substrate, coral rubble, and soft sediment using a broad, muscular foot. Some species can also expand their broad parapodia to swim gracefully through the water column with slow, undulating wing beats. Sea hares are simultaneous hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs, and are famous for forming extensive mating chains or circles where multiple individuals fertilise each other simultaneously. When startled or harassed by predators, many sea hares can discharge a dense, striking cloud of purple or white ink mixed with a foul-tasting milky substance called opaline, which confuses visual predators and temporarily impairs their chemical senses. For scuba divers and underwater naturalists, encountering a sea hare offers an enchanting look into the slower, more deliberate rhythms of the reef and seagrass ecosystems. Watching these gentle molluscs graze serenely or glide through open water with delicate parapodial strokes is mesmerizing.
