Encountering flashlight fish requires exceptional buoyancy control and situational awareness, as these dives take place in total darkness along steep walls or cavern entrances. Brief your dive group beforehand to switch off all primary torches once you are safely positioned near the reef, allowing your eyes several minutes to fully adjust to the dark. Never shine high-powered dive torches or focus lights directly at the fish, as sudden intense light disrupts their vision and causes the school to scatter immediately into deep recesses. For underwater photographers, standard flash photography will completely wash out the bioluminescent glow; instead, use an ultra-sensitive low-light camera sensor with a fast prime lens (f/1.4 or f/1.8) and high ISO settings (12,800 or higher) mounted on a steady tripod or held with motionless neutral buoyancy. Keep fins well away from fragile wall corals while hovering in the dark.

By day, they seek refuge in subterranean recesses and deep waters ranging from 100 to over 400 metres deep, completely out of reach of sunlight and recreational divers. At night, especially during the new moon, they migrate up vertical reef walls into shallower depths between 5 and 30 metres to forage. The waters this animal calls home span the tropical Indo-Pacific, including the Banda Sea, Komodo, and Raja Ampat in Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and fringing reef drop-offs in the northern Red Sea.

Diet

Flashlight fish are nocturnal zooplanktivores that feed almost exclusively under the cover of absolute darkness. Their primary diet consists of tiny pelagic crustaceans, such as copepods, amphipods, mysids, and various planktonic larvae that drift past the reef edge. To detect their prey in the void, these fish use their glowing subocular photophores as biological searchlights, illuminating small volumes of water directly ahead of their snouts. When a prey item is illuminated, the fish strikes with rapid precision, using its slightly upturned mouth to engulf the organism.
