Instantly recognisable by its elongated, tweezer-like snout and slender, laterally compressed body, this captivating fish features a vibrant white or translucent background overlaid with a striking crosshatch grid of bright red or scarlet-orange bars. Its dorsal fin is armed with ten stiff spines, each tipped with delicate, tuft-like cirri that resemble minute feathers, adding to its ornate appearance. Because it lacks a swim bladder—a hallmark trait of the Cirrhitidae family—the longnose hawkfish cannot hover effortlessly in mid-water. Instead, it relies on heavily thickened, elongated lower pectoral fin rays to prop itself up and perch steadily on vertical surfaces and delicate branches without damaging fragile coral polyps. Widespread across the tropical Indo-Pacific, its range extends from the Red Sea and the eastern coast of Africa across to the Galapagos Islands and the Gulf of California. Locating a longnose hawkfish requires a trained eye and excellent buoyancy control, as they predominantly dwell on vertical walls and current-exposed pinnacles between 15 and 35 metres. Divers should avoid touching or finning near fragile gorgonian fans and black corals, maintaining neutral trim and hovering slightly offset from the reef face. Approach slowly and avoid rapid hand movements; sudden gestures will cause the fish to dart deep into the thickest interior of the coral fan. For photographers, a dedicated macro lens (60mm to 105mm on full-frame systems) is essential. Use dual strobes positioned outward to prevent backscatter in deep water, and diffuse the light to soften harsh shadows across the coral's intricate branches. Set a fast shutter speed (1/200s or faster) to freeze the subject, as they frequently make sudden, jerky hops across branches. Always monitor depth, bottom time, and gas supply carefully during wall dives.

Best Season

Habitat

The longnose hawkfish occupies deep coral reefs, seaward drop-offs, pinnacles, and steep channel walls throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific. Divers find them residing from the northern Red Sea and East Africa across the Coral Triangle to Hawaii and the Galapagos. They occur across a depth range of 10 to 100 metres, though they are most frequently encountered between 18 and 40 metres where light penetrates yet current flow remains strong. The species is strictly tied to branching structural habitats, virtually always perching upon large seafans (suborder Holaxonia), whip corals, and bushy black corals (*Antipatharia*). These current-swept structures provide elevated vantage points, vital shelter from large predators, and access to a continuous stream of drifting planktonic prey.

Diet

The longnose hawkfish is an opportunistic ambush predator whose diet consists primarily of small benthic and pelagic invertebrates. It feeds heavily on tiny crustaceans, including caridean and cleaner shrimps, copepods, amphipods, mysids, and larval crab megalopae that drift past on the prevailing current. Occasionally, it also takes tiny larval fish and fish eggs. Its hunting strategy is built around exceptional patience and explosive acceleration: remaining motionless on its coral perch, the fish tracks approaching plankton or invertebrates with binocular vision before launching a sudden, precise dart to seize prey. Its elongated, forceps-like snout allows it to probe deeply into crevices, tight coral branches, and stinging hydroid clumps to extract sheltered crustaceans without injury. Feeding takes place throughout the day whenever tidal currents deliver a steady conveyor of nutritious macro-plankton along reef walls.
