The map puffer (Arothron mappa), also known as the scribbled pufferfish, is one of the largest and most distinctively marked members of the family Tetraodontidae. Reaching impressive lengths, this solitary fish possesses an oval, heavy-set body covered in small spinules rather than standard scales, giving it a velvety appearance. Its defining visual characteristic is the intricate network of dark, labyrinthine lines and scribbles meandering across a background of greyish-white, pale olive, or dull yellow. These markings form a pattern remarkably reminiscent of an antique cartographer's chart or topographical map. Radiant dark bands extend outwards from the small, expressive eyes, and a prominent dark blotch encircles the gill opening and pectoral fin base. Lacking pelvic fins, it relies on synchronised, undulating movements of its dorsal and anal fins for precise propulsion, steering gracefully with its broad, fan-like caudal fin. Widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, this species ranges from the Red Sea and East Africa across to Samoa, north to southern Japan, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. Approaching a map puffer requires calm, controlled movements and impeccable buoyancy to avoid disturbing its tranquil nature. Always maintain a respectful distance of at least two to three metres; never chase, corner, or touch the animal. Causing a pufferfish stress to the point of inflation is physically exhausting for the fish, exposes it to immense internal strain, and can leave it vulnerable to injury or predation. For underwater photographers, approach slowly from a low angle to capture the captivating, intelligent gaze of its independently moving eyes. Utilise dual strobes or strong video lights to bring out the subtle yellow hues and intricate dark marbling of its skin, as ambient light at depth quickly dulls these intricate patterns. Keep your camera settings tuned for medium-aperture macro or close-focus wide-angle shots to preserve crisp detail along its maze-like facial lines.

Best Season

The map puffer can be observed year-round across its extensive tropical range, though local dive seasons dictate peak conditions. In Egypt and the wider Red Sea, conditions are prime between September and November when water temperatures remain warm and visibility is exceptional. In Indonesia, liveaboard routes across Komodo National Park offer splendid sightings between April and December, while Raja Ampat shines from October to April. Visiting the Maldives between December and April provides calm seas and crystal-clear lagoons ideal for shallow reef exploration. On Australia's Great Barrier Reef, diving is favourable throughout the year, with the calmest surface conditions and excellent clarity occurring from June to November during the winter and spring months.

Habitat

The map puffer inhabits clear, sheltered waters of tropical marine environments across the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea. It typically ranges from shallow reef flats and sheltered lagoons at depths of 1 metre down to rich outer reef slopes and drop-offs around 30 metres. The species demonstrates a strong affinity for areas rich in diverse coral growth interspersed with sandy patches, coral rubble, and sponge-encrusted overhangs. Juveniles are commonly encountered in protected inshore habitats, seagrass meadows, and shallow estuaries, seeking refuge among mangrove roots or branching corals. Mature adults claim home ranges along outer barrier reefs, deep lagoon bommies, and steep walls where oceanic currents deliver food and provide crevices for resting during slack water. From the East African coast and Madagascar through Southeast Asia, the Coral Triangle, and into the remote archipelagos of Micronesia and Polynesia, these waters represent the animal's natural home.

Diet

The map puffer is an opportunistic benthic carnivore equipped with a formidable, beak-like dental apparatus formed by the fusion of four heavy plates. This crushing beak allows the fish to feed on robust, calcified prey that many other reef inhabitants cannot penetrate. Its varied diet comprises hard and soft corals—particularly branching *Acropora* tips—as well as sponges, tunicates, sea anemones, benthic algae, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Sponges form a substantial portion of its nutritional intake, making it an important sponge predator on tropical reefs. Foraging occurs predominantly during daylight hours and around dusk. The puffer hovers closely over the substrate, using focused jets of water expelled from its mouth to uncover buried invertebrates in the sand or carefully shearing off coral tips and sponge matter with its powerful jaws.
