Reaching impressive lengths, this solitary fish possesses an oval, heavy-set body covered in small spinules rather than standard scales, giving it a velvety appearance. Its defining visual characteristic is the intricate network of dark, labyrinthine lines and scribbles meandering across a background of greyish-white, pale olive, or dull yellow. These markings form a pattern remarkably reminiscent of an antique cartographer's chart or topographical map. Radiant dark bands extend outwards from the small, expressive eyes, and a prominent dark blotch encircles the gill opening and pectoral fin base. Lacking pelvic fins, it relies on synchronised, undulating movements of its dorsal and anal fins for precise propulsion, steering gracefully with its broad, fan-like caudal fin. Widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, this species ranges from the Red Sea and East Africa across to Samoa, north to southern Japan, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It is an exclusively marine, non-migratory fish typically found patrolling sheltered coral reefs, deep lagoons, and outer reef slopes. By day, the map puffer is generally diurnal or crepuscular, spending long hours resting near coral heads, sheltering beneath rocky overhangs, or foraging methodically along the substrate. Like all tetraodontids, it harbours lethal tetrodotoxin in its internal organs, particularly the liver, gonads, and skin, serving as a powerful chemical deterrent against predation. In extreme peril, it can rapidly inflate its elastic abdomen by gulping water, transforming into a spiny, swollen sphere that is nearly impossible for predators to swallow.
