Cardinalfish belong to the family Apogonidae, a large group of ray-finned fishes within the order Perciformes. The family includes between 200 and 370 species divided across 23 to 24 genera and four subfamilies: Amioidinae, Apogoninae, Paxtoninae, and Pseudaminae. They are widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, where they primarily inhabit shallow coral reefs and lagoons. While predominantly marine, a few species inhabit brackish waters and a small number reside in fresh water. These fish are generally small, laterally compressed, and elongate, with most species measuring under 10 cm, though overall lengths across the family range from 5 to 20 cm. Anatomically, cardinalfish are distinguished by two separate dorsal fins—the first bearing six to eight spines—along with two anal spines, large scales, and a preopercle featuring a distinct ridge before its border. They possess notably large eyes and a large, oblique mouth situated at the front of the head. Many species exhibit rich red or reddish coloration that gives the family its common name, though others are patterned in shades of yellow, brown, black, silver, or distinct horizontal and vertical stripes. Cardinalfish are strictly nocturnal homebodies that select a specific spot on the reef and remain there. During the day, they take shelter in dark reef crevices, small caves, coral tentacles, among long urchin spines, or inside the living shells of conchs. At dusk, they emerge to hover in the water column or over the substrate. While many species are seen individually, in pairs, or in small aggregations, some eastern Pacific species form dense aggregations near the reef surface. Divers and underwater photographers are drawn to cardinalfish for their varied patterns and remarkable reproductive behaviour. They are among the rare marine fishes that practice oral brooding. During spawning, the female releases a gelatinous mass of several hundred eggs, which the male fertilises and engulfs in his mouth. Male cardinalfish have longer heads and larger jaws than females to accommodate the clutch. Throughout the several-day incubation, the male cannot feed, devoting his energy to churning and juggling the eggs until they hatch into planktonic larvae measuring 2 to 4 mm.

Because cardinalfish are small, shy, and nocturnal, finding them during daytime dives requires looking into shaded reef spaces. Search inside dark overhangs, deep crevices, underneath table corals, between the protective spines of sea urchins, or among coral tentacles. On muck dive sites with dark sand, some species hover close to exposed debris or small shelter sites. When approaching cardinalfish, maintain excellent buoyancy control to prevent disturbing their shelter or kicking up sediment on muck bottoms. Avoid shining high-intensity dive lights directly into their large, night-adapted eyes; instead, use the edge of your beam or a red focus light to observe their subtle patterns without causing distress. During night dives, cardinalfish leave their daytime hides and can be seen hovering above the reef to feed. Keep a close eye out for mouthbrooding males, easily identified by their noticeably distended throats. If a male partially opens his mouth, the bright egg mass inside becomes visible. Give brooding males plenty of space, as unnecessary disturbance can stress them into aborting or swallowing the egg clutch.

Cardinalfish are year-round resident species that do not undergo seasonal migrations. Because they are homebodies that stick to specific reef locations, divers can encounter them during any month of the year across their tropical and subtropical distribution in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Deciding the best time to dive for cardinalfish depends entirely on local weather, water temperatures, and seasonal visibility at specific diving destinations rather than the seasonal movements of the fish themselves. In major diving regions like the Indo-Pacific and the Caribbean, calm sea conditions and warm water during peak local diving seasons provide optimal viewing opportunities for exploring shallow reef structures and dark crevices. Night diving provides consistent, active encounters regardless of the month, as cardinalfish regularly leave their daytime shelters at dusk to feed. Furthermore, specific localized populations remain highly accessible year-round; for example, introduced Banggai cardinalfish at Police Pier in the Lembeh Straits of Indonesia reside at shallow depths of 12 metres and can be reliably observed in any season.

Habitat

Cardinalfish inhabit tropical and subtropical waters worldwide across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. The majority of species are marine, occupying shallow coral reefs, rocky reefs, and coastal lagoons. A small number live in brackish environments, and a few specialized species inhabit fresh water. The Indo-Pacific region exhibits the greatest diversity of cardinalfishes, whereas the tropical Eastern Pacific hosts a smaller number of endemic species. Within the reef ecosystem, cardinalfish are tightly linked to micro-habitats that offer protection from predators during the day. They seek refuge in dark crevices, small caves, beneath ledges, between coral branches, and among sea urchin spines. Certain Caribbean species, such as Astrapogon stellatus, take shelter inside the living shells of conchs. They are also frequently encountered on dark-sand muck sites, where low ambient light suits their nocturnal habits. Depth distribution is primarily shallow, with most species inhabiting shallow lagoon flats, reef tops, and upper slopes from the surface down to standard recreational diving limits, where suitable shelter and crevices exist.

Diet

Cardinalfish are nocturnal predators and planktivores that feed actively between dusk and dawn. As sunlight fades, they emerge from daytime hiding places within reef crevices and overhangs to search for food in the open water column or along the substrate. Their large eyes are adapted to gather light, allowing them to locate prey in near-total darkness. The diet of cardinalfish consists predominantly of zooplankton, with copepods forming a major part of their prey intake. They also feed on small benthic invertebrates, including tiny crabs and shrimps. Cardinalfish utilize their large, oblique mouths to capture drifting planktonic organisms or pick small invertebrates off the reef surface with precise, rapid snaps. Feeding behaviour changes drastically for male cardinalfish during the breeding cycle. When brooding, the male holds a gelatinous mass of several hundred eggs in his mouth and is unable to feed for the duration of the incubation period, which lasts several days. His primary focus during this time is juggling the egg clutch inside his mouth to keep the eggs aerated until they hatch into 2 to 4 mm planktonic larvae.
