Given their nocturnal habits and preference for cool, deep water, encountering a chambered nautilus usually takes place during dedicated blackwater or deep drop-off night dives. Divers must practice immaculate neutral buoyancy, as fragile outer reef walls plunge sheer into thousands of metres of open ocean. Ensure torches are fitted with red filters or low-output diffusers; the primitive pinhole eyes of the nautilus are intensely sensitive to light, and intense white beams can cause permanent retinal damage and disorient the animal into hazardous terrain. Always maintain a respectful distance of at least two metres, never attempting to touch, manipulate, or redirect the animal's path. Photographers should shoot with ambient focus lights, using twin strobes positioned wide with diffusers on low power to prevent backscatter and avoid blinding the subject. Their primary geographical range spans the waters around the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and extending to New Caledonia and the Great Barrier Reef off northeast Australia. These animals inhabit an extensive bathymetric depth range from 100 to over 700 metres, spending the daylight hours in cool, high-pressure depths between 300 and 600 metres to escape heat and diurnal predators. Because their shell implodes at depths exceeding 800 metres and their metabolic physiology suffers in warm surface water exceeding 25°C, they strictly inhabit deep oceanic margins where cool, upwelling currents prevail, only ascending to recreational scuba depths of 15 to 40 metres during the night.

Diet

The chambered nautilus is primarily an opportunistic scavenger and low-energy benthic predator, relying on its keen sense of olfaction rather than vision to detect food in the dark depths. It feeds heavily on the molted carapaces of crustaceans, dead fish, carrion, and occasionally live, slow-moving benthic invertebrates like small crabs, hermit crabs, and burrowing shrimps. When foraging, it extends its numerous thin, adhesive tentacles to probe deep into sediment, reef crevices, and overhangs. Once food is located, the tentacles draw the prey towards its powerful, parrot-like beak composed of chitin and reinforced with calcium carbonate. This robust beak, paired with a raspy radula, effortlessly crushes the toughened exoskeletons of crustaceans and slices through animal tissue.
