Dwarf Minke Whale

The dwarf minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subsp.) is an unnamed subspecies of the common minke whale, representing one of the smallest forms of baleen whales in existence. Characterised by a slender, highly streamlined body, a flattened head, and a sharply pointed snout, it possesses a tall, curved dorsal fin positioned roughly two-thirds of the way between the head and tail. Its underside features 50 to 70 throat grooves that allow for throat expansion during filter feeding. Visual identification relies heavily on its distinct colouration. The dorsal upper side ranges from dark grey or brownish-grey to black, while the underside is white, pale grey, or pale brown. Unlike Antarctic minke whales, dwarf minke whales possess striking white bands on their small, pointed flippers, alongside dark throat patches and vivid white shoulder blazes and stripes. A variable light grey saddle patch sits in front of the dorsal fin, and the tail flukes are dark on top with a pale underside. This subspecies occurs almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. While its migration paths span vast distances, its most famous aggregation occurs in the tropical waters of the northern Great Barrier Reef off Queensland, Australia. Other stranding and sighting records span from Melbourne and Fraser Island on the east coast of Australia to Perth in Western Australia, as well as off Durban, South Africa. Divers and underwater observers prize encounters with dwarf minke whales because of their extraordinary inquisitiveness. Unlike many baleen whales that actively avoid human activity, dwarf minkes frequently make deliberate, prolonged approaches to stationary vessels and swimmers. During these interactions, they display fascinating social behaviours, including synchronous swimming and belly-to-belly passes, which are believed to be associated with winter courtship. Historically, dwarf minke whales largely escaped large-scale commercial whaling due to their smaller size and low oil yield, though small numbers were taken in scientific research programs. Today, there appears to be no commercial whaling targeting them, though they face potential threats from entanglement in fishing gear, marine contaminants, and traditional harpoon hunting outside protected regions.

In-water encounters with dwarf minke whales are carefully managed, particularly in the northern Great Barrier Reef where permitted tourism operators run dedicated swim-with programs. To ensure safe and respectful encounters, swimmers enter the water quietly and hold onto a surface rope attached to the vessel. Scuba diving is generally not used during these interactions; instead, surface floaters remain stationary while the whales control the distance and duration of the approach. Swimmers must maintain minimal movement, avoid sudden splashing, and refrain from swimming directly toward the animals or attempting to touch them. During encounters, divers and snorkelers should listen for an array of underwater vocalizations. Their acoustic repertoire includes low mechanical sounds, resonant "boings", and distinct vocal calls often described as sounding like "Star Wars" effects. Pay close attention to individual markings, such as dorsal fin shape and unique body scars caused by cookie-cutter shark bites or historical harpoons, which can assist local research projects with photo-identification efforts.

Best Season

The primary season for observing dwarf minke whales in the northern Great Barrier Reef runs from June to July, with encounters extending into August. During these southern winter months, whales aggregate around the Ribbon Reefs and shallow waters north of Port Douglas and Cairns. Sightings begin to drop off from late July onwards as the whales disperse. It remains uncertain whether this reduction is due to animals migrating away or simply approaching vessels less frequently. Courting and mating behaviours, including belly-to-belly swims, peak between June and August, while calving is believed to peak around May, supported by sightings of very young calves in northern Queensland. For the remaining 8 to 10 months of the year, dwarf minke whales leave the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, migrating south into sub-Antarctic and Southern Ocean waters (around 55°S to 62°S) where they feed in nutrient-rich ocean zones before returning to tropical waters.

Habitat

Dwarf minke whales inhabit continental shelf and oceanic waters throughout the Southern Hemisphere. They exhibit a seasonal migratory pattern that shifts between low-latitude tropical reef systems in winter and higher-latitude oceanic feeding grounds during summer months. In tropical habitats, such as the northern Great Barrier Reef, they are frequently encountered along the edge of the continental shelf, deep outer reef slopes, and channels between outer coral reefs. They utilize open water stretches adjacent to barrier reefs, ranging from shallow coastal waters to deep offshore drop-offs. Outside their wintering grounds, they inhabit cold temperate and sub-Antarctic open ocean waters. Recorded sightings and strandings extend across southern Australia (from Perth to Victoria and Fraser Island), Durban in South Africa, and high-latitude Southern Ocean regions. Their broad reliance on continental shelf zones highlights their adaptability across oceanic environments.

Diet

Dwarf minke whales are filter-feeding baleen whales. Their diet primarily consists of small schooling fish, krill, and various forms of zooplankton. On occasion, minke whales capture larger prey items, including fish as large as wolffish or dogfish. When feeding, the whale engulfs large quantities of water containing prey, expanding its throat using 50 to 70 specialized throat grooves. It then forces the water out through its short baleen plates, trapping prey inside its mouth to be swallowed whole. While detailed feeding observations in their tropical winter grounds are limited, minke whales that spend extended summer months feeding in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters consume dense aggregations of krill and small fish. In these cold feeding grounds, their skin can accumulate a yellowish sheen caused by the growth of diatoms (microscopic algae).
