Always maintain horizontal trim and stay at least a foot above the seabed to prevent silt-outs caused by fin kicks. Approach the fish slowly and laterally, never from directly above, which simulates an attacking predator and will cause it to flee. To capture the iconic wing-spread display, wait quietly at a respectful distance; gurnards often flare their pectoral fins as a territorial gesture or when briefly repositioning. Diet

Their preferred prey includes small crabs, hermit crabs, mantis shrimps, amphipods, polychaete worms, bivalves, and small sand-dwelling teleost fishes.
