
Amberjacks comprise several prominent predatory fish species within the genus Seriola belonging to the jack family Carangidae. Among them, the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is the largest member of the family, growing up to nearly two metres in length. These muscular, highly agile fishes feature an elongated, laterally compressed fusiform body covered with tiny cycloid scales, perfectly designed for high-speed pelagic swimming. Their body colouring varies from a brownish or bluish-grey tone along the back down to a clean, silvery-white underside, often complemented by a subtle yellowish or reddish-brown band running horizontally along the flanks. A distinct visual identifier for divers is the characteristic dark diagonal stripe extending from the snout, passing directly through the eye, and running up towards the front of the dorsal fin. This stripe becomes significantly more pronounced and darker when the individual is actively feeding, agitated, or excited. While full-grown adults possess dusky fins, juveniles exhibit a vibrant yellow hue marked with five or six dark vertical bands across their sides, alongside a sixth band on the caudal peduncle, which gradually disappears as the fish matures. Amberjacks enjoy an expansive, almost circumglobal distribution across tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate ocean environments. They are common across the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and throughout the Pacific. Occupying both pelagic and epibenthic zones, they thrive around rocky outcrops, seaward reef walls, deep ocean caves, and submerged shipwrecks, occasionally straying into coastal bays. Amberjack, encompassing several species within the genus Seriola, are typically pelagic, schooling predators found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide. They exhibit diurnal activity patterns, actively hunting smaller fish and invertebrates, often congregating around structures such as reefs, wrecks, and offshore oil platforms. Their social behaviour is characterised by forming groups, which can range from small aggregations to large schools, providing both hunting efficiency and protection from larger predators. Reproduction in amberjack is typically achieved through broadcast spawning, where mature individuals release eggs and sperm into the water column for external fertilisation. Spawning seasons vary by species and geographic location but generally occur during warmer months, often peaking in spring and summer. Each female can produce a substantial number of pelagic eggs, sometimes reaching millions, which hatch into larvae within a few days. These larvae develop into juveniles, often associating with floating debris or sargassum mats for shelter. Sexual maturity is typically reached between two to four years of age, depending on the specific Seriola species and environmental factors. For scuba divers, encounters with amberjacks are often a highlight of deep offshore dives. These powerful fish are naturally curious and frequently circle divers, marine structures, or pinnacles in small to moderate-sized schools. Their impressive size, combined with their fast-paced predatory movements powered by strong, tuna-like caudal fins, makes them a captivating sight around high-current drop-offs and wreck sites worldwide.
